Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abigail Kay Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abigail Kay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
As I’ve gone from a writer to an author one of the things that has changed the most is my social media. Managing my own social media has its ups and it for sure has its downs, however I’ve found that it can be one of the most enjoyable things once you know who you are reaching out to and interacting with your fans. As the years have gone by I’ve even out grown my own social media and have assisted other authors, it’s been one of my favorite things to work with and the fall back on working behind the scenes on social media after a long day of writing is a joy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been writing, doing social media virtual assistance, and graphic design seriously since I was in my mid-teens, before that I had played around for a few years with writing and social media, with graphic design being a long time hobby.
Now, I’m an indie author of three books (two of which are anthologies, one of them I hosted with a good friend.) with four or five new books and anthologies coming in 2023. When I’m not writing I am likely doing work behind the scenes on social media for myself or others, and when I’m not working or writing I’m bound to be working on graphic designs. I’ve created roughly 50 covers for ebooks and paperback books that are published or going to be published soon.
Cover designs are my favorite part of graphic work since from one cover can come so much more. It’s a brand that needs finely tuned and makes or breaks your story.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Finishing a project that I can share and be proud of, the joy of those I share my stories with, and the feeling of fulfillment of having given readers a lesson or an escape from the real world. There’s not much that beats the pleasure of a reader telling you that they enjoyed your story and took away something from it.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In the beginning, I hated social media. I still do, but I also love it. As an author social media is the biggest tool you’ll find. The most important part of social media is interacting with your followers. If you don’t interact you don’t get interactions, the same goes for consistency. You must post consistently.
Once you have your schedule, it’s all about sharing, sharing, sharing, and interacting as much as possible.
After a while, it will go from something you hate to something you enjoy.
