We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abigail Heather a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abigail , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started learning about photography back in high school. My little brother was always into sports and staying active, while I was more drawn to creative pursuits like music and art. My parents had bought a beginner-level camera to take pictures of him at his baseball games, and that’s when I fell in love with photography.
Fast forward to 2022 — I got engaged and found myself immersed in the wedding industry, which is when I really began taking my photography more seriously. I took courses on shooting and editing, attended business workshops, and absorbed everything I could about photography and the industry.

Abigail , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been drawn to the arts — it just runs in the family. My mom’s an artist, my dad’s a musician, so creativity was kind of a given growing up. I’ve always felt most like myself when I’m making something, whether it was music, painting, or eventually… photography.
I picked up a camera more seriously during college. At the time, I was studying music and needed something that gave me a break from the pressure of school. Photography started as a fun side hustle, but it quickly turned into something much bigger. It became my escape from the stress of the world.
These days, I specialize in photographing people during the biggest moments of their lives — engagements, weddings, graduations, maternity, and family sessions. I love capturing real emotions and human connection.
What sets my work apart is how much I genuinely care. I’m not just there to take pretty pictures — I want to create something that feels personal and true to you. I love getting to know the people I work with and creating a space where they can feel comfortable, be themselves, and just have fun.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my work, it’s that I put my whole heart into every session. Whether it’s your wedding day or a quiet Sunday family shoot, I’m there to help you capture the little moments that mean the most.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Like pretty much any college-aged girl on social media, I started by following everyone I knew from my personal life on my photography page. From there, I started connecting with other local vendors, and it all kind of took off. I also took a marketing workshop that focused on social media and finding your “audience” — especially through platforms like Instagram. That helped a ton, and since then, it’s just continued to grow.
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to building a social media presence? Don’t take it too seriously. Honestly. The number of followers you have isn’t what makes or breaks your business — it’s the quality of those followers. A smaller, engaged community that actually connects with your work is way more valuable than a big number with no real connection.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is showing people how beautiful they really are. One of my favorite moments is when a client tells me before a session that they’re awkward in front of the camera, or that they’re not photogenic, or that they hate taking pictures — and then, partway through the session, I show them the back of the camera and watch their face light up.
That shift — when someone sees themselves in a new way and realizes they can look and feel amazing in front of the lens — that’s everything to me. I truly believe everyone is photogenic. It’s just about creating a space where people feel comfortable, seen, and relaxed. That connection between the couple and the photographer really does make all the difference.
