We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abigail Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abigail, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
To be successful in anything in life you have to maintain a strong level of hard work and determination. Without those things you will always remain in the “victim” mindset, and you will allow anything and everything to get in your way. My hard work and determination started from a very young age when I was the middle of seven children growing up. Anything I wanted or needed, I had to work hard for. At the age of fifteen, I was working a part-time job, attending highschool and heavily involved in sports. I had to show up everyday in order to have the life I desired, and still to this day I have to force myself to do that. As a wife, busy mom of four kids, and business owner, I could allow the mundane tasks of those roles to take over my life. Instead I wake up ready to tackle what is in front of me for that day, and keep pushing through until I come out on top. Not every day is a win, however I know that without hard work and dedication, my goals and dreams are so much further away. It is a concenious decision I have to make every single day to show up being the best version of myself, even when I don`t want to.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Abigail Brown, and I am a cosmetologist, salon owner, and salon mentor in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I am also a wife, and a mom of four young kids; ages 9,6,2, and 6 months.
My journey in the salon began in 2015, directly out of cosmetology school. I gained an assistant position with my now business partner, Rhysa Anderson. Rhysa and I had an immediate connection and began building our brand almost immediately. We both knew there was more for us, so when Rhysa made the decision to open Baddhare Salon and asked me to come with her, it was a no brainer. In 2017 Baddhare Salon was born and I was one of just a few stylists. Shortly after opening the salon, I began taking on management roles within the business and within about 2 years I had grown my leadership abilities and was an active role in the day to day operations of the business.
In 2020, Rhysa asked me to become an official partner of Baddhare Salon, and take over 1/3 of the business. I had never before seen myself as a salon owner, but it felt like this was the right step for my career and my family, so I agreed. This was the first step in my journey as a salon owner, and I never imagined I would be signing up for the successes and challenges that I have experienced.
In 2021, our first offical year as salon co-owners, we experienced over 100% growth in our business. We grew our team from 10 employees, to over 20 employees. We moved into a new location and began occupying over 3,000 square feet.
With any amount of growth in a company, there come growing pains. Through adversity, Rhysa and I were able to grow our partnership and set out to build a brand that we could model for other business owners.
In 2023, Baddhare Alliance was born. Baddhare Alliance is a prestigious affiliate program for owners who want to expidite their success in the beauty industry. As a result of someone becoming a Baddhare Alliance Affiliate, Rhysa and I support owners with a strong foundation for a profitable business through the use of tools, coaching and support.
I am most proud of my hard work and determination in my career while also growing my family alongside my husband. This day in age women are expected to choose between having a family or having a career. We are told that the two cannot co-exsist; however, I am a prime example that you can have your cake and eat it too. You should never have to choose, and the only person that can limit yourself, is you. I am not saying it is going to be easy, but I was always taught that if you want something bad enough, then nothing will get in your way. I want to show my daughter that nothing is impossible for her — she can build the empire of her dreams, while simultaniously creating the life of her dreams. The two can and will co-exsist if you try hard enough.
How’d you meet your business partner?
In early 2015 a mutual friend (our now salon manager!) introduced me to my now business partner, Rhysa Anderson. I was young and freshly out of beauty school, and thrilled to meet Rhysa; a succsessful and talented Goldwell educator and hairstylist. She wanted to hire me as an assistant before I began my career behind the chair. Shortly after interviewing with her I found out I was expecting my first child and I was not quite ready to start my career in the industry knowing I would have to take time time off shortly after beginning. At the time it did not work out, but westayed in touch. Towards the end of 2015 after I gave birth to my first child, and so did Rhysa, we reconnected and hit it off. It was as if it was meant to be…we waited and were patient for the right timing, and it finally came. I started working as Rhysa`s assistant in December of 2015, and the rest is history. In the almost 10 years we have been together I have grown from an assistant fresh out of beauty school, to booth renter, to commission stylist, to salon manager, to salon owner, to salon mentor. All titles I am so deeply proud to have, because of what I have learned going through all of them.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building reputation within our market has always been important to us at Baddhare Salon. We believe in fostering relationships with those around us that will help build us up and create postive interations for our community. In doing this, we have been able to network with likeminded companies, both big and small, to reach a larger audience. We attract a diverse clientele through our passion for education and transparancy in our product choices. We are active in our community by participating in local cosmetology school programs and charity events, hosting quarterly events in our salon, and through the launch of Baddhare Alliance that supports salon owners with the opening of their own businesses. All of these things aid in building the Baddhare Brand and ensuring our name reaches beyond Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
