We were lucky to catch up with Abhinav Gopisetty recently and have shared our conversation below.
Abhinav, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
1. How did you learn to do what you do?
I began my acting journey in Los Angeles, where I was lucky to work with some of the best coaches and mentors around. Their guidance, combined with workshops and on-set experiences, gave me a solid foundation. Over time, I learned that truly trusting my preparation and allowing performances to flow naturally helped me grow the most. Even now, I see acting as a continuous process of discovery.
2. Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
If I could go back, I’d make four changes:
Watch My Performances Sooner: Critiquing my own tapes would have helped me spot issues earlier.
Ask for Help: Reaching out to coaches, directors, and peers can give you fresh perspectives.
Take Small Steps: Instead of focusing on the big picture, I’d break my goals down into achievable milestones.
Stay Mindful: Practicing breathing exercises and being present would have helped me stay centered under pressure.
3. What skills do you think were most essential?
Vulnerability & Authenticity: Expressing genuine emotion breathes life into any role.
Discipline: Preparing thoroughly—studying characters, memorizing lines—lays the groundwork for strong performances.
Self-Acceptance & Ease: Embracing who I am off-camera helps me bring honesty to my work on-camera.
Adaptability: Each project and director has different demands, so staying flexible is key.
4. What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
For me, fear of success and fear of failure were surprisingly strong barriers. In an environment as competitive as LA, I’d worry about not measuring up, but I’d also stress over what would happen if I actually achieved the goals I set. Limiting beliefs—that I wasn’t ready, or that I didn’t deserve to succeed—only added to the pressure. Recognizing these fears and questioning those limiting beliefs helped me stay focused on growth rather than the outcomes. It’s a constant, ongoing process—I still have to remind myself to reframe those worries as opportunities for growth, rather than threats. By doing so, I keep my motivation strong and my perspective clear.
Abhinav, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I stepped away from a successful career as a leader in information security to pursue my lifelong dream. I’d always been drawn to storytelling, and after years in the corporate world, I realized I had to follow my passion. What truly sets me apart is my blend of corporate leadership experience and artistic vision. I apply the same discipline and analytical mindset I honed in tech, but now I pair it with the open-hearted creativity that comes from embracing a lifelong dream. I’m most proud of taking that leap—walking away from stability to chase what I’ve always loved. It taught me resilience, creativity, and the power of stepping outside my comfort zone. Today, it feels incredible to use my unique experiences to tell stories that connect with people on a deeper level.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s the sense of fulfillment I get from creating something that resonates on a deep, emotional level. It’s a feeling I never experienced in the corporate world, no amount of money or power can replicate it. The highs are unbelievably high, and every new role or milestone brings a burst of pride that reminds me why I took this leap in the first place. I love seeing my skills grow over time; it’s incredibly satisfying to look back and see the progress I’ve made.
I also relish the collaborative nature of this world: working alongside directors, writers, and other actors all striving toward a common vision. It creates a synergy and energy that’s unlike anything else I’ve experienced.
Most of all, being an artist provides an endless path for growth and discovery. There’s always a new character to explore, a new perspective to understand, or a new skill to master. It’s never boring, it’s a constant journey of learning who I am as a person and what I’m capable of.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing non-creatives might struggle to understand is how deeply personal and, at times, intangible this journey can be. In a corporate setting, there’s often a clearer path to success—milestones, promotions, a sense of stability. But when you’re pursuing something artistic, it can feel like stepping into the unknown. There’s no guaranteed roadmap, and success isn’t always quantifiable or immediate.
What drives me forward is this profound sense of purpose. It’s about creating something meaningful and sharing a piece of myself through the work. The emotional highs and lows are intense. When it’s good, it’s the most alive I’ve ever felt; when it’s tough, it challenges me to dig deeper and keep learning.
For someone on the outside, it might be confusing—why trade security for uncertainty? But creativity can’t always be explained with logic. The stories we tell and the connections we forge are priceless. I think the best insight I can offer is that the creative journey isn’t just a job; it’s a calling. And if you feel that pull, it’s worth exploring, even if the road isn’t a straight line.
