We recently connected with Aberdeem and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aberdeem, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Food has always been my passion. I’ve always known that was my path, it just took me a little while to get there. I’ve always been cooking and baking as a hobby, I never knew I could do it professionally. I had always dabbled with the idea of running my own business, but was unsure of how to translate the idea into a reality. It was until I went to visit my cousin in California, we were roaming the streets of Venice Beach, when I saw all these really neat different types of food trucks serving different types of cuisines, it was just amazing! That’s when I felt a light bulb go off. I’d found what I wanted to do. Of course, I had seen snow cone trucks roaming around town since I was little but never saw anyone passing out cupcakes, brownies or cookies. That’s when I knew I had to be the first! Well, at least in my hometown.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember. I love everything about it, the measuring, the mixing, the smells, and of course the taste. I’m crazy about cakes, cupcakes any type of dessert really. Baking a cake for me is immensely satisfying. It’s something that I am grateful that I get to do for a living. I am so happy when I take a dessert to a friend knowing that I made this for them with all my heart. Watching them take the first bite and say WOW Aberdeem that is so delicious!….that is what keeps me going. It’s been almost 12 years now into my culinary career. I feel like I’ve done it all yet I still feel like I have so much more to learn. I am always learning new techniques and it definitely takes time to get your desserts to a high standard. It requires lots of research, practice, patience and creativity. I’m definitely not where I want to be at but I am always working towards it, I couldn’t imagine doing anything different. It allows me to fulfill my creativity as well as my love of baking. I love that every dessert is different which presents new challenges and therefore keeps it exciting. I love how creative I can be with my desserts and find that very fulfilling. What I am most proud of is Betty, my dessert truck. I put my heart and soul into making her a reality. Dreams don’t come true unless you put in the work and I put years of dedication into Betty. She is what sets me apart from others…..along with the love and passion I give to anything I bake. It takes a lot of consistent and hard work. I don’t think the job will ever get easier. But with enough passion, you will keep going strong!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I know that my business stands out from the rest. The beauty of Street Sweets and our Sweet Betty is that we are a bakery on wheels, wherever the party is, we can be there – either delivering our goodies or handing them out from our Sweet Betty truck. We’re not tied to one location. But probably the best perk is that I’m able to interact with people face to face, and see firsthand their enjoyment when they eat my product. I want when people leave from visiting Betty, to leave a little bit better than when they walked up to us. Even if it’s just because of a tasty sweet or a smile from Mama or me. It sounds corny but if I can make our customers smile with one of our cupcakes, cookies, brownies or whatever, then I have fulfilled my mission.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I actually built my first food truck back in 2013 with my Dad. “The Taco grill, it was a big hit! We were thriving but soon right after we opened my dad fell ill. I had realized my dream of opening up my business but at the same time, I was dying inside not having my father next to me cooking, baking and helping me run the truck. It was a very difficult time in my life. I was working 13, 14 hours a day, seven days a week going straight to the hospital right after to go visit dad. This went on for about a year and a half. Unfortunately, my dad didn’t survive cancer but it definitely made me stronger, maybe not right after it took me a couple of years to regain my strength and confidence. But I remember that my Dad would have not given up so easily. I haven’t given up. I started fresh with an original idea of my very own something that’s entirely me creatively and entirely my vision… that is my passion mainly for baking. So I started my hometown’s first mobile dessert truck. Out of the storm came “Betty” and I couldn’t be happier. My mom and I run her. I have been through hell and back these past couple of years but I am a fighter and I have not given up on my dream of baking desserts from all over the world!
