Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abel Zhang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Abel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Becoming a designer was not always part of my original plan—even though I had been practicing painting and calligraphy since childhood. My initial goal was to pursue a more STEM-oriented path, focusing on engineering and construction, as I had a strong interest in logic and mathematics during high school. However, my perspective shifted when I was introduced to digital media. It changed the way I viewed art and design—I realized that art could be integrated with technology, expressed through logic, and brought to life through video, music, and interaction. That revelation led me to return to the path of becoming a artist and a designer. Today, as a Senior Designer at Comcast, I stand at the forefront of technological innovation, transforming it into visual language to better tell brand stories. In many ways, this journey has brought me full circle—back to the creative purpose that first inspired me to pursue design.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Abel—an award-winning multidisciplinary designer specializing in motion graphics and visual identity. I’m driven by a mission to craft engaging brand experiences and immersive visual narratives, leveraging expertise across ideation, design, motion, production, and beyond. As a designer and visual artist, I integrate digital media technologies to bring artistic concepts to life through dynamic motion design.
My work includes collaborations such as the Nebraska Capitol Art Experience, a government-supported project that brings the Capitol’s historic artwork to a global audience, celebrating Nebraska’s rich heritage and enduring spirit. I also partnered with the Chinese art collective X+Q Art to create Ai Mei · Midsummer for Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts—an installation that honors the cultural diversity and regional identities across China.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Today, building and maintaining a presence on social media has become increasingly challenging—largely because the world is filled with an incredible number of talented creators and accounts. I started engaging with social media back in 2012, initially just sharing art and design works that inspired me. Over time, I began posting my own thoughts and creative perspectives.
From my experience, the most important principle for sustaining a meaningful presence on social media is to stay original and authentic. Don’t let algorithms or audience preferences dictate your creativity. Instead, focus on creating content that you genuinely care about and believe in. Let social media amplify that passion—this approach builds a stronger, more sustainable personal brand.
Consistency also matters. Posting regularly helps maintain connection with your audience. On social media, people have short memories—so post whenever you can.
Above all, stay humble. Social media is one of the most diverse spaces I’ve encountered, filled with brilliant people from all walks of life. It constantly offers fresh perspectives—sometimes even more thoughtful or developed than your own. Respectful, open dialogue is key to meaningful interaction. Trust me—no one enjoys being lectured online.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Conversations—real conversations—are everything. Seek out every opportunity to talk to people. Share your ideas, your creative thinking, and don’t hesitate to ask questions when you’re facing challenges. Whether it’s through the internet, school, or your workplace, use every channel available to connect with people from different backgrounds. Schedule a 30-minute coffee chat, silence your phone and computer—and just talk.
When you’re in a genuine conversation, you’re far more likely to receive personal, meaningful advice rather than the generic noise you find online. It becomes a true exchange of minds—one that can help you discover more about yourself. In many cases, it’s far more valuable than any structured guidance you might come across elsewhere.
