We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abel Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abel , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
When i went from a barbershop to starting my own studio that was a big risk for me, at 22 with no experience of running my own Buisness it was pretty difficult, all of a sudden i was in charge of everything. From figuring out how i was going to get clients in my suite, marketing, how to do taxes the right way, staying organized, and keeping track of everything in my Buisness was pretty overwhelming to say the least. it was tough at the begining but along the way i learned alot of valuable lessons from the mistakes that i made and i believe without risk i wouldnt be where i am now.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got started with cutting hair because i was always fascinated by looking clean and sharp, i figured barbering was a career that really fit my lifestyle since a very young age.
Here at my studio i like to create an environment where you can come here relax, and have great conversation all while making you look like your best self.
I take great pride and am very passionate in what i do. From hot towel shaves to the nicest fades i am my hardest critic my haircuts all have to be up to par, or else i am not satisfied with my work.
I am proud of the fact that i get to do what i love everyday in a space that i have created for myself and my clients also very proud of the great relationships that i have built over the years.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped build my reputation within my market was my dedication to the craft. I really try to go the extra mile to satisfy my clients. in this business I feel like what lacked was convenience and great customer service. New customers would come in and tell me how they were tired of their old barber running behind and not being organized with their schedule and they just couldn’t find a barber that was reliable. if its one thing I hate is bad customer service so in my Business I treat my clients how I would want to be treated in any other business.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is marketing myself right online, giving my all to every haircut that walks out of my studio and building great relationships with my clients.
