We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abeer Jowaid a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abeer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
Family Businesses:
I am the sole owner of Stemtree of McKinney. However, I had tremendous support from my husband Dr. Monther Haddad. He helped me in various aspects of the business management. He worked over 22 years as a Telecom Engineer, he currently teaches Math and AI, and he has a doctorate in Business Administration. His support was invaluable in the success of Stemtree of McKinney.
What works Well:
– Having one or more family member with you give a great sense of security. You have 100% trust when it comes to honesty and loyalty. Having somebody who shares the same goals and interests means that you can have that person represent you in any event or gathering knowing that this person will do whatever possible to succeed.
Pitfalls:
– Avoid mixing the personal life with business. In family operated businesses, conflict can arise quickly. It is of a great importance to have clearly defined roles for each person.
– Conflict can occur quickly and over any issue. Having a clearly defined set of responsibilities can help avoid miscommunication and potential conflict.

Abeer, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Abeer Jowaid. I own and operate Stemtree of McKinney. This is a STEM Education Center that offers after-school programs and Camps that focus on STEM enrichment for school students K-12. Our enrichment programs are fun, hands on, and educational. I had a dream to own an education center and teach kids the major topics of STEM. I have over 17 years of experience teach Math. I feel honored and heart-warming when I hear the feedback from parents about how their kids liked our program. At Stemtree of McKinney, our STEM program truly covers the four pillars of STEM (Science, Coding, Robotics, and Engineering). We are continuously working with the Franchiser to improve the program and the offered lessons and activities.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think that dealing directly with the students and their parents and being always available at the center created a great reputation for Stemtree of McKinney among families. Myself and all the instructors always brief the parents everyday about what their kids learned and the activities they had during the day. This created assurance at the parents that we care about the education of their kids. The time the kids spend at Stemtree of McKinney is full of fun and learning.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
When I opened the business, the first clients were those who passed by the center. With time, the major source of new clients became the word of mouth. I go to many different events, STEM nights, Camp Exhibitions, etc and I think the consistency in what we do goes a long way in getting new clients. Being available in front of potential customers will pay off with time.
