We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abbygale Chung a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abbygale, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’ve been fortunate to dance for numerous TV and film productions. Among these, one standout moment was embodying the character “Lucille” in Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, where I not only danced but also delivered lines—an exhilarating first for me. My role as a recurring chorus performer and dancer was a highlight of my career.
Another significant chapter in my journey was being part of Monster High, where I contributed in skeleton crew and dancer to both the first and second films. Immersing myself in this world meant embracing full-face prosthetics, marking a unique challenge that led to lasting bonds with the cast—a testament to the power of shared experiences in the realm of entertainment.
I had the privilege of dancing in the electrifying Shien: Rock the Runway digital fashion show, where I shared the stage with Ylo Garcia and the band Future X. During the fashion show, I was given solo individual shots—a truly cherished opportunity amidst the grand scale of the production. These moments hold immense significance for me, as I deeply appreciate these unforgettable experiences.
Abbygale, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Embarking on my dance career at a young age has been a transformative journey, opening doors to diverse and extraordinary avenues. From dancing live alongside luminaries like Janet Jackson, Miyavi Ishihara, and Ylo Garcia, to shaping campaigns for music icons such as Ed Sheeran, SIA, Elyanna, and Foster The People, each step has woven a rich tapestry of artistic exploration.
My dancing has transcended stages and screens, intertwining with global brands like Nike and 7-Eleven, while also working on a myriad of TV and film productions—from the iconic show So You Think You Can Dance to enchanting realms crafted by Disney, Netflix, Paramount+, and SYFY, among others.
Transitioning into a creative role, I found myself teaching at esteemed institutions like Millennium Dance Complex and Movement Lifestyle. More recently, I’ve been interested in bridging the gap between dance and cinema. This fusion culminated in a dance short film that earned a prestigious nomination at the World Choreography Awards—a testament to the power of movement as a universal language.
Dance, for me, has always been more than just movement—it’s a profound means of self-expression and blissful connection. Recently, it has evolved into a catalyst for pushing the boundaries of creativity and fostering inclusive communities, underscoring its enduring significance in my life’s narrative.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What captivates me deeply is encountering art that pushes boundaries, unveiling realms I had never fathomed before. At this juncture, my creative pursuit orbits around birthing the unprecedented—venturing into territories unseen through my eyes—and reimagining familiar tasks through a fresh, innovative lens.
Immersing myself in the process of dissecting my traditional approach to creative endeavors, I relish the exhilarating challenge of reshaping the very foundations of my craft. The allure of crafting the uncreated propels me forward, igniting a profound sense of purpose and delight in the journey of artistic exploration.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I find it best to support artists by actively engaging with their creations and contributions. Attend gallery exhibitions, immerse yourself in online art platforms, experience live shows firsthand, and contribute to the works that resonate with your beliefs. Your presence and support for artists in your community hold profound significance, fostering a vibrant and nurturing environment that uplifts and sustains the creative spirit in ways beyond measure.
