We were lucky to catch up with Abby Skeans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Abby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Despite professional success, for more than 20 years I struggled with chronic depression that was covering over trauma resulting in a deep lack of self-belief.
On countless mornings, lies greeted me with their unpleasant insistence that I was unlovable, unqualified, and never enough. Those lies started to become my belief and they were changing me — changing my life — and not for the better.
Unfortunately, I’m not alone in this challenge. As you likely know, the statistics are overwhelming that women desire more support to unlock their potential: 90% of women experience self doubt and limiting beliefs (Psychology Today), 78% of women suffer from imposter syndrome and feel as though they are not enough (APA), and 75% of women report that limiting beliefs hold them back (Linkedin Global Gender Gap Report).
In 2021, my therapist and I partnered to develop a practice that I could do between sessions to accelerate and deepen my personal growth. That RITUAL changed my life. I created Belief Statements based on the same life practice and supported by the same products that I used to accelerate my healing. Belief Statements is a life practice that builds transformative self-belief.
Our science-backed methodology is a consistent RITUAL, supported by empowering products and cultivated within community. We’ve integrated four wisdom traditions: psychotherapy, somatic healing, human performance and spiritual formation so women can tap into their personal sovereignty to build powerful lives at the intersection of purpose and passion. While we support anyone’s development,
Belief is a valuable “between wellness / therapy sessions” tool that can accelerate and deepen a continuous personal growth journey. Belief takes a holistic and empowered approach toward women’s wellbeing, focusing on mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health by offering an integrated solution that rewires neurology and focuses on long-term transformation.
For any woman who has ever had a morning, a moment, an experience where she questioned yourself, one of our everyday products — candles, mugs, journals and water bottles — instantly brings you back to who you are. This brand was created for YOU. Your beliefs will change you. They will transform who you are and who you become. They will determine your life’s path.
The world is so loud. Our mind voices can be brutal. And our experiences can be disappointing. But the deepest truth is that you don’t need anyone to tell you who you are, because you already know. You already know that you are loved, qualified, unstoppable, brave, fearless, and enough.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Abby Skeans, the CEO and visionary behind Belief Statements. For those who may not be familiar with my journey, my passion for empowering women and fostering personal growth has been the driving force behind my career. I began my journey as an international human rights attorney and then spent the last 15 years on social impact investing. While that work yielded a lot of “success,” it was covering over my lack of self-belief that I didn’t address until I began working with a new therapist in 2021 who introduced me to a unique multidisciplinary approach which pulled from four wisdom traditions to create a new approach for women who wish to build self-belief, incorporating wisdom from: psychotherapy, somatic healing, spiritual formation, and human performance.
Belief Statements is more than just a brand; it’s a movement dedicated to helping women discover the intersection of their purpose and passion. Our flagship product called RITUAL is a monthly subscription that provides seasonal practice guides, monthly products delivered directly to your door, and a daily community of support on What’sApp.
I’m incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made so far, especially the success stories of women who have transformed their lives through our programs. Seeing our community members thrive and build unshakeable belief in themselves is the most rewarding part of this journey.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that Belief Statements is here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re tuning into our show, participating in our workshops, or engaging with our products, know that our mission is to help you unlock your fullest potential. We are committed to creating a space where you can explore, grow, and become the best version of yourself.
Thank you for joining us on this transformative journey. Together, we can build a world where every woman believes in herself.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Perhaps the most formative book that catalyzed my own journey of self-belief was “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest. It was the first time that I read something that left me as empowered and cognizant of my own agency and sovereignty as the creator of my life and experience.
The book is a comprehensive guide to recognizing and overcoming the internal obstacles that prevent us from achieving our full potential, offering both deep insights and practical advice. It examines how deep-seated subconscious beliefs influence our behavior and decisions, often leading to self-sabotage. Recognizing and reprogramming these beliefs is a key step in the transformation process.
And Brianna provides practical strategies and exercises for readers to implement in their daily lives. These include mindfulness practices, journaling prompts, and reflective exercises to help identify and overcome self-sabotaging behaviors. The book highlights the importance of resilience and growth mindset. It encourages readers to view challenges as opportunities for growth and to embrace the discomfort that comes with change. Ultimately, “The Mountain Is You” is about transforming self-sabotage into self-mastery. these concepts and practices helped me step into my higher self and is what I still leverage today as a founder of a growing company.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Two lessons come to mind of little sayings that we often throw around in society that actually become deeply seated beliefs that inform how we move in the world. The first one is: “don’t get your hope up!” It’s a phrase we likely heard all of the time growing up to help us temper our expectations. But fundamentally beneath this phrase is the idea connected to the second idea — that life is happening to us, not for us or by us.
When we view ourselves as passive receptors in the “sea” of life, we root into a belief that life is beyond our control. That we are a victim to everything negative, and a grateful beggar of everything good. However, the truth is that we are creators of our reality. We are sovereign over our lives and experience. By intentionally “getting our hope up” we are not only creating more possibility, we are designing the way in which the universe has to interact with our belief.
