We recently connected with Abby Ryan Phillips and have shared our conversation below.
Abby, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My dad is definitely one of my biggest heros, especially when I think about my business. He is a business owner and has been such an example to me of how it is possible to be a successful business owner, but still a very present & loving dad, prioritizing his relationship with the Lord and his family over work. It has shown me how the Lord truly blesses you when you have your priorities in the correct order. He is also always striving to learn more and improve all areas of his life, business, parenting, & more. That has taught me humility & that there is always more you can be learning & improving in your life and business!
Abby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a graphic designer & illustrator and I offer all kinds of services such as branding design, digital graphics for web & social media, and print design which is a very wide range of materials. Some examples of print design projects I have completed are billboards, cosmetics packaging, publication design, flyers, business cards, invitations, wall murals, merchandise, menus, & so much more! I think something that sets me apart is the range of what I offer. A lot of businesses focus on just one aspect of design (like a branding or web design company for example), but I offer any & everything anyone could dream up! My favorite part of my job is presenting a design to my client & helping them achieve the dream they have for their business in a visual way. I also think offering both graphic design & illustration services helps me stand out as well. I am also a Mom-owned business and work at home with my little girl while raising her and being present in her life. When I see other moms doing the same thing it is so inspiring!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes! I did freelance graphic design on the side starting in college, and loved the feeling of accomplishment when I was able to work with clients that came to me because of my design style! After I had my daughter, I stopped working my full time job and decided to pour a lot more time & effort into growing my own business. Raising her is my priority, so I wanted to do something that helps us live a very flexible lifestyle & allows me to be present in her life & childhood.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Definitely seeing my client’s reactions & the joy they get when something they have been dreaming of comes to life visually. I’m always honored & humbled that they choose me to execute and create their vision & dream!
