We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abby Knight. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abby below.
Abby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was a teenager, about 17 I think, I started my first Youtube channel. I loved the idea of Youtube and the editing portion fascinated me most of all. I uploaded a lot of videos inspired by my favorite movies and tv series at the time, along with random clips of me acting with different accents. I absolutely loved what I was doing and I started building a community of likeminded people with that channel. I even held my first giveaway in collaboration with a small online gaming company. I was awkward and had no idea what I was doing, but I was having fun doing it. It helped me deal with a lot of depression and anxiety and offered me an escape when the world was too heavy. Unfortunately, two years later I was pressured into going to college for an alternate career path and all passion and inspiration was lost. It was a miserable time that ended with me abandoning that Youtube channel.
It took me years to realize that content creation was what I really wanted to be doing, but when I finally did, I started a new channel. I had no idea what I wanted to upload so I dabbled a bit, but ultimately started gaining clarity in 2020.
If I had known what social media would turn into and that creating content could be a career, I would’ve been more stubborn about sticking with it as a teenager. Deep down I knew that that was all I wanted to do.
Abby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Abby and I’m a content creator! My main focus currently is Youtube and Instagram and I love to create aesthetic, calming, cinematic masterpieces (an exaggeration haha) that fill the viewer with emotion. I love life and simply existing, especially while in nature, so I create videos/reels/photos that reflect that feeling. I’ve slowly started getting into more vlog-style videos as well so the viewers can get to know me more as a person. I want to be a friend for those who need one, someone to hang out with or even live vicariously through. An element to my videos that I find unique and interesting is my ability to tell a story without words. My videos are very heavy on visuals and sounds and feeling so the viewer can interpret the story however they like.
I want viewers to think of my channel as an escape. A safe space to relax and enjoy time with a friend.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way to support creatives is to give them your views, your likes and your shares. That goes so much farther than most people realize because it’s those things that the algorithm picks up on which then gets your content out there more so more people see it and share it and so on. That eventually leads to brand deals which means the creator is earning money so they can create even more content to share. So if you enjoy someone’s content, please take the extra time to like and share it!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is when I inspire others or help them in some way. Those times when someone tells me that my content calmed them after a difficult breakup or inspired them to go hiking more or simply gave them 10 minutes of enjoyment – that keeps me going over everything else.
