We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abby Houghton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abby below.
Abby, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I have been singing since I could talk, so I started basically as soon as I could. When it came to taking it more seriously, I wish I did it sooner! Growing up, I was in musical theater, choir, and was a leading woman in 2 plays. I was growing quickly in the industry and was getting recognized for my talents. I loved literally every second. Around the age of 15, I got struck with stage fright for the first time. Sadly, it never went away and made me stop singing and performing completely. I even flew all the way to California to audition for American Idol and got too scared to try. It wasn’t until I was 22 that I finally released my own music and started putting myself out there again. If I could do it over again, I would have never stopped.

Abby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Abby Houghton (aka: Abbee) and I am a local singer/songwriter! I have been a singer for as long as I can remember and started teaching myself the guitar at age 16. About a year later, I started writing my own lyrics and music. It did not come easy at first, but after some life events and maturing, it started flowing so naturally. I finished and released my first EP in 2021 and I couldn’t be more proud of it. My song ‘Alright’ is definitely my favorite and speaks straight from my heart about a hard experience I went through at the start of creating it the EP. Since the release, I have performed twice and am going to start doing more shows this summer! My main goal is to have relatable music that people can listen to and instantly feel heard and understood. Music is the one thing that always made me feel less alone, and all I want is to provide that feeling to others now. To anyone that has listen to, or will listen to my music in the future, thank you so much. It means more to me than you could ever know and the support is what keeps me going!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
This is a great question. Since I have started as a musician, the best thing to ever happen is when fans or listeners reach out to me directly. I have had several explain that they have never heard a song that explained so perfectly what they were going through. At the end of the day, that is ultimately my main goal. To hear that my music has touched someone’s heart and soul and all I could ever ask for! The support I have received through the process is also so so rewarding. My friends, family, boyfriend, and even his family have been my #1 fans, sitting front row at my concerts, and sharing my music with everyone they know. I feel insanely blessed to be so loved and supported by the people who surround me.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson that I had to learn and overcome was my stage fright and negative thoughts. Around the time I quit music completely, I had a really close friend tell me I wasn’t good enough and that I should just stop trying. My heart broke that day and my view on my talents completely shifted. I didn’t sing again for about a year. Looking back on it now, I can’t believe I let one persons opinion of me change my beliefs and view of my talent. Negative thoughts will still creep their way into my mind and try to get me to stop, but all I have to do is keep pushing through them. At the end of the day, music is the thing that makes me happy and it makes me who I am. So my advice to anyone who can relate, IGNORE PEOPLE WHO TRY TO DRAG YOU DOWN!
