Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abby Blake. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Abby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents have always been so supportive in everything I’ve done! They have always and continue to be in my corner & help me to navigate any obstacles that I come across. The older I get the more I realize how lucky I am to have parents that love me & want to see me succeed in my personal life & in my career! I have always felt unconditionally loved by them & I think they have done a great job in allowing me to make my own choices & help me learn valuable life lessons.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in a small town in Minnesota & am now based in Nashville, TN! I am a recording artist who’s music resembles an Adele style vocal with a Celine Deon style production, though I am constantly discovering who I am as an artist! I teach voice and piano lessons along with writing and recording my own music! When I was a kid, I first learned to play piano before I discovered my passion for singing. My biggest vocal influence growing up was Carrie Underwood, and then I felt large inspiration from other artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Deon, Adele, Elton John, and Lady Gaga to name a few. When I went to college I started at the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse and then transferred to Berklee College of Music my junior year. Music has always been such a large part of my life as my dad’s side of the family is incredibly musical. My love for performing only grew as I got older and this is what inspired me to move to Boston to attend Berklee! After I graduated from Berklee with a degree in Professional Music with concentrations in Songwriting, Performance, and Music Production I moved to Nashville! I have been here now for almost 3 years, gigging at places around town & on Broadway! I was also cast in this season of American Idol and this has been my craziest experience since moving to town and in my career! I am so grateful for my experiences & the people I’ve been able to meet in the last couple of years!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There’s nothing else I can see myself doing! There’s truly no plan B. Music is my passion and being an artist, writer, and performer is how I get to express myself to others. I want to make people feel something when they listen to my music. I want to make them feel seen or heard and give them words to something that they’re feeling or experiencing. I think relating to people through music is such a beautiful experience.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There is a video of Steve Harvey speaking to his audience during a commercial break on Family Feud that my dad showed me when I was in high school. Harvey talks about taking jumps throughout your life in order to be successful. Taking risks and making a leap even though you may be afraid in order to unlock your potential or get to the next step. This has inspired me to move to Boston and then to move to Nashville. Not being afraid to pursue what I’m most passionate about. It’s inspired me to take the gifts I’ve been given and sharing them with the world.
