Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abbey Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abbey , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I feel as a business owner you take risks everyday. Some small, some big! But the biggest risk I took is what got me to where I’m at now!
Before I signed my lease to open my store, I knew I was taking a huge risk. Rent in Nashville is expensive, the store is in an incredible neighborhood, but slightly off the beaten path. I also just wasn’t sure if people would like what I was about to bring to the table!
But with the encouragement of my family and business partners, we decided to go for it! I did the math on how many candles I’d have to sell a day and I went for it! I of course had a business plan and all that too, but I needed a goal!
The day after we signed our lease Nashville suffered a terrible tornado , which heavily hit our shop neighborhood. Then a week later everything shut down due to Covid. SO I was terrified at this risk I decided to take. But we pressed on, and I’m so glad we did!
Abbey , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
HI! I’m Abbey, owner of The Golden Slipper! I’ve been at this journey for 15 years! That’s also how long I’ve been a Nashville Native.
We moved to Nashville for music, and really pursued that dream for a good 10 years. But along the way I wanted to use my creativity to try to make some extra cash, so I started a jewelry and greeting card business.
I sold my creations at various local shops and on my website. That just naturally morphed into making candles ,and then I threw hosting events and workshops into the mix. After having a pretty successful few years at doing that, my husband finally said ” I think your hobby could be a business!” And we figured out how to open a store!
I’ve had so much love and support along the way from my husband and brother, who are both my business partners now in The Golden Slipper. They have both tirelessly worked over the years helping me with events and graphic design and pretty much anything you can think of.
My family also is so encouraging, always teaching me to take the risk because, well I can do it! And lastly Nashville has been a very supportive community , and my friends and followers all over the US have followed me on the journey too! It’s taken a village for sure!
We now have a wholesale side to our business where we create and make private label candles and apothecary for other brands, not just our own!
I of course would still love The Golden Slipper Candles and brand to someday be a household name!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One important lesson I’ve learned and am still figuring out, is to no matter what still go with your gut and stay true to who you and your brand are. I’ve listened to many voices over the past years , and I now realize they’ve taken me a little bit off the path I was on. So I’ve had to learn the hard way how to pick up those decisions I made based on what others were suggesting I do, and get back to who I am!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started out with a blog! I still have this blog, but it’s taken a back seat the last few years as my business took off. But I started out by just being me! and telling my story through fashion, travel, food, and creations I was making!
My following started picking up, and I really feel that is one way that helped me in my new venture. With out all of those friends on social media, we wouldn’t have had a jumpstart like we did!
Consistent posting and just being authentically crazy me on social media has connected me to so many great folks online!
