e were lucky to catch up with Abbey Kress recently and have shared our conversation below.
Abbey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I began my guitar-playing journey as a self-taught musician. I learned a lot of songs by ear and played what felt natural to me. Based on the knowledge I have now, I believe that developing a more structured practice routine earlier on would have greatly accelerated my progress. Dedicating time to learning proper techniques and the fundamentals of music theory is extremely important. I can say, without a doubt, that self-discipline is the most essential skill to have as a musician. Strong dedication and consistency provide a stable foundation on which talent can thrive. Throughout my musical journey, there was one obstacle that stood in the way the most: Imposter Syndrome. Feeling like I wasn’t “good enough” to be a successful musician hindered my progress at times. Thankfully, I have overcome this obstacle and encourage others to do the same.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Abbey Kress, and I am a rock and metal guitarist who creates guitar covers and posts them on social media. I also sing and play flute, piano, and a couple of other instruments. I love to share my passion for music and hope to inspire others to chase their dreams.
I have felt a strong connection to music ever since I was young. My musical journey started in the fourth grade playing flute in the school band. I knew that playing an instrument made me feel alive, but it wasn’t until many years later that I began my journey as a guitarist.
My passion for playing guitar began the moment I saw Guns N’ Roses live; as soon as Slash ran out on stage, I knew I wanted to become a guitarist and make music my career. From that point on, I have dedicated my time to improving my knowledge of the instrument and refining my performance skills. I spend many hours a day working on techniques, learning music theory, filming covers, and writing songs. I pride myself on giving accurate and high-energy performances that bring joy to viewers. In the future, I plan to release original music and further fulfill my creative potential.
Playing guitar and writing music is a source of life for me. I am grateful to live in a time where my creative projects can be shared so freely. I hope to show people that, through hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Music is the language of life and it deserves to be shared.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My desire to someday share my original music with the world is the driving force behind my creative journey. Music is very therapeutic and I want to create songs that people can relate to and feel inspired by. I also want people to know that they are capable of achieving their dreams. I believe that music is an art of expression and that there are no barriers or limits to anyone who wants to create and share music.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have grown my audience on social media by maintaining a consistent posting schedule and building genuine connections with other creators. Social media is a lot of hard work, and keeping up with the algorithm by frequently posting engaging content is essential. Being your authentic self and not comparing yourself to others is also a fundamental part of building a social media presence.
