Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abbey Hogan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Abbey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents have been very supportive and influential when it comes to me starting a business and wanting to work in the business field. My dad himself owned and operated successful iconic brisbane nightclubs for over twenty years (Jade Buddha, Adrenalin sports bar). He always trained me on how to interact with people and the ins and outs of running a business from a young age. My mum herself is very empowering having raised four children and being a lawyer, so they really inspire me to work hard, no matter the career I am in. The most important thing they’ve taught me is that you must always keep an open mind about the direction your business or career can go, so you can see ultimate opportunities and be flexible in your approach when aiming to achieve things.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Abbey Hogan, I am a student studying a double degree of Business (marketing) and Comminications (Digital Media) at QUT. I also own an ethical clothing line (Jayne the Label) which I started up in highschool at 17. The business started with me simply gifting my friends scrunchies that I made for them as a present to symbolism the friendship we had, and from there other girls noticed my work and started buying tops and togs. The range now specialises in ethical swimwear and jewellery, with sporadic drops of handmade satin tops or scrunchies. The brands mission is not only to make girls feel comfortable in their own skin and symbolise girlhood ( considering the whole brand started off as presents for friends) but also aims to help aid the rehabilitation of Balinese culture and seamstress work after the disastrous effects of Covid-19. With all swimwear and a range of the jewellery being created from Indonesia’s most ethical and high end seamstresses, the brands goal is to be as ethical and positively influential as possible. Further, through personally creating a lot of the pieces I have creative freedom over the small business’s vision and can also personally continue to ensure it’s ethics and high quality. Additionally, I have a casual job that I love working at as well as being digital content creator and social media editor for my brother’s business, Ethical Gems.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I like to keep an open mind in business , and understand I am only 20 years of age so have a lot of growing to do. I pivoted from wanting to study Law and chose digital media at University. This is because I wanted to learn marketing and have an in depth understanding as well as experience within every functioning part of a business.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
We personally create satin tops and satin scrunchies when we do sporadic drops. I believe this allows us to make each item to the best of our ability and when I was originally starting out I would do custom sizes for people. I also personally create and design all the jewellery (besides the limited edition Balinese bracelets we sold) , which I love creating and can make for hours on end. The swimwear itself is designed by me and produced by a group of seamstresses who pride themselves on ethics and high quality. We have a very transparent relationship with the producers and our quality checks are unmatched. I post all of the products and package them with an individualised thankyou message on our biodegradable bags .
