We were lucky to catch up with Aasiya Outlaw recently and have shared our conversation below.

Aasiya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

A few years ago, I decided to take a risk that turned out to be both exciting and life-changing. It all started when I was working in a stable job, but I felt a deep sense of dissatisfaction and yearned for something more fulfilling. I had always dreamed of pursuing a career in mixology and entrepreneurship. So I went to bartending school to pursue my bartending career. I faced numerous , but I persevered and pushed myself beyond my comfort zone. Every day brought new adventures, and I felt a sense of fulfillment I had never experienced before.

I was filled with a renewed sense of purpose and a newfound confidence in my bartending skills.

I decided to take my passion for bartending to the next level and started my business . The risk I had taken had not only opened doors for me creatively, but it had also transformed my entire career path.

Looking back, I am grateful for the courage I had to take that risk. It allowed me to discover my true passion and embrace a life filled with creativity and fulfillment. It wasn’t always easy, but the rewards far outweighed the challenges. Taking that risk was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I ever made.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Certainly! Building an audience on social media can be a challenging but rewarding journey. Here’s a story of how I built my own audience and some advice for those starting to build their social media presence:

When I first started building my social media presence, I had a clear vision of the audience I wanted to connect with and the content I wanted to share. I began by choosing the platforms that aligned best with my goals and target audience. For me, it was Instagram and Twitter.

To start, I focused on creating high-quality and visually appealing content that resonated with my target audience. I invested time in honing my photography and editing skills, ensuring that my posts stood out and captured attention. I also made sure to maintain a consistent aesthetic and theme across my feed, which helped to establish my brand identity.

One of the key strategies I employed was engaging with my audience and other content creators in my niche. I actively responded to comments, thanked people for their support, and asked questions to encourage conversations. By showing genuine interest and building relationships with my audience, I was able to foster a sense of community around my content.

Additionally, I utilized relevant hashtags to increase the discoverability of my posts. Researching and using popular and niche-specific hashtags helped me reach a wider audience and connect with people who shared common interests.

Collaborations with other content creators were also instrumental in growing my audience. By partnering with individuals who had a similar target audience but a different creative perspective, we were able to cross-promote each other’s content and tap into new audiences.

Consistency played a vital role in building my audience. I established a regular posting schedule and stuck to it, ensuring that my followers knew when to expect new content from me. This consistency helped to build trust and loyalty among my audience.

Lastly, I actively listened to my audience’s feedback and adapted my content accordingly. I paid attention to the types of posts that received the most engagement and adjusted my strategy to focus more on the content that resonated with my audience.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that I needed to constantly compare myself to others on social media. The backstory behind this lesson is that when I first started building my social media presence, I found myself constantly comparing my follower count, engagement, and content quality to other creators in my niche. It became a source of stress and self-doubt.

However, over time, I realized that this mindset was counterproductive and detrimental to my growth. I came to understand that each person’s journey on social media is unique, and comparing myself to others only hindered my progress. It took a conscious effort to shift my focus away from comparison and towards self-improvement.

I learned that the key to success on social media is staying true to myself, my vision, and my audience. Instead of comparing myself to others, I began to focus on creating content that genuinely resonated with my audience and brought me joy. I realized that my value as a content creator extended beyond numbers and metrics.

By unlearning the habit of comparison, I was able to embrace a healthier and more positive mindset. I started celebrating my own achievements, no matter how small, and appreciating the progress I made in my own journey. This shift in perspective allowed me to truly enjoy the process of building my social media presence without being weighed down by unnecessary self-comparison.

The lesson I unlearned was a valuable one, and it has not only improved my experience on social media but also contributed to my personal growth. I now understand that focusing on my own progress and staying authentic is far more fulfilling than constantly comparing myself to others.
