We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aaronlwsn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aaronlwsn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work and it definitely hasn’t been easy, but it was always worth it. It took me only 2 steps to get here Retainers – a lot of creative struggle with constant money flow coming in, the solution to that problem is placing clients on retainers, and a retainer is simply monthly money coming in to create Word of mouth-this step was very important to me, because 5 years into creating videos I never posted or shared any of my work, and was constantly getting booked, coming to shoots on time, giving great energy, and always trying in most situations to give more and always have fun, your client will be able to tell if you’re doing this for monetary benefits or you actually like to create It wasn’t like that from day one and in order for true growth there needs to be a process, just like a plant, you can’t put the seed in the ground and expect a plant the next day.
Aaronlwsn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Aaron. I always like to introduce myself as a superhero. My ability is that I can make people travel back in time to relive a special moment I am a cinematographer and video editor. My team and I run a video production company based in Dallas Texas, but we travel around the world. We produce emotion-filled stories that resonate with customers and re-enforces and differentiates their brand from the competition. Businesses often struggle with telling a story about their business and creating brand awareness. Well, I solve that by creating story-telling videos in the commercial, real estate, concerts, and events spaces. I pride myself on always delivering quality stories and immersive videos.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
funding my business wasn’t the easiest thing, especially at a young age I find myself getting lost with a lot of materialistic things like my biggest mistake was buying a Mercedes Benz at 19, at the time it was so sweet sounded so amazing but when it comes to business you have to analyze long term goals, Mercedes aren’t the best for a daily driver because the gas you put on that machine doesn’t end up adding up, so when it came to funding my business I like to focus mainly on the things that would propel my business forward not the newest tech, or just random gear, I do have the newest camera and equipment but that because my team and I made a decision that these would be what’s needed to take us to the next level, we had a very detailed analysis the early stages – me literally shooting for the smallest amount of money with borrowed gear from friends and family and saving money not spending, rinse and repeat for a long time before I was able to buy my own
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to show Gods artwork through me, my second goal is to retire both my parents with my creativity, lastly, what is driving me is just always wanting to see better for myself, with everything I do, I have always held myself to a high standard and hardly get comfortable in one spot I’m always looking for the next mountain to climb
