We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aaron Sommers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aaron below.
Aaron, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
In 2017, a friend had invited me out to an anime convention. I had never been before; I had the time so why not? It ended up being one of those Aha! moments, that changed my life. Everything I had desired to be before was now null and void.
I saw the energy ooze out of the cosplayers and the excitement of creating something from their bare hands, fully on display for people to ogle, judge and get inspiration from. It was a creative bombshell that encapsulated me. The experience alone unleashed a desire to try it out myself. To see how and what I was capable of.
Thus, SpideyWu was born!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
[[Insert glitchy sounds here!]]
Alright! Let’s do this one last time. My name is Aaron Sommers. I was bit by a radioactive spider and for 7 years I have been the one the only SpideyWu! I am pretty sure you know the rest; I created a bunch of spiderman and anime personas. Designed my own suits. Fell in love. Got married. Saved the city from lackluster. And no matter how many negative comments I get I always find a way to come back.
But in all seriousness. I love what I do! I take characters from amines, shows, nostalgia, fast-food franchises you name it! Then I design and create a spiderman persona from that inspiration. Sure, some designs are greater than others, some crazy and unnecessary and others that continue to grow a lot of publicity. But behind each one was this small idea that I just couldn’t let go of.
To say I was surprised by my growing fan base would be an understatement. I did not think that it would get this widespread. I was pleasantly surprised that so many people would resonate with my passions and work. That is truly amazing to me. I have met so many amazing people through this, just with that alone my life has changed. There is a type of peace that also comes with the time I get to spend with myself; the late nights, the brainstorming, editing and collaborating with exceptional people. It takes a lot of communication with pattern makers and suit makers as well.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Within the last 2 years I taught myself how to use a 3D printer. It has changed the quality of my work along with the time frame it takes to complete props, accessories and face shells. This is an absolute game changer for sure! If I had discovered this earlier, I could have had an easier time. But it’s not to say I didn’t enjoy all those years before using a Dremel, foam and craft materials, this is just a lot easier and less frustrating.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist is having the ability to bring my ideas to life.
