Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aaron Payton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Aaron, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Aaron, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started audio engineering around age fourteen at which point I was in high school in my first band Infrastructures. We didn’t know what we were doing as a band but we really liked being around each other and the music only made that better! At this stage of my life nothing was too serious and every member of the six piece Alternative Rock group had time to aimless throw at the musical project for shows and recording and more hanging out. After time went, we all grew into people thinking more about the longevity of our lives, some band members moved into web development and others into hvac. But I felt stuck, stuck in the way my overly creative mind didn’t want to stop moving. This feeling led me to pursue an art degree to lean into, what at that time, felt organic to me. I’ve always been a pretty tunnel visioned person so even through my college years I’d ask myself “How do I apply this” with every anxious turn “What’s next” and “What will that look like for me next year.”
After graduating with a Bachelors degree in Film the basic, and even more so, the odd jobs stuck with me. I was a waiter and that taught me how to speak with many different types of people, I was a in-house nurse and that taught me to listen, I worked for the Television Network in Irving which put the reality of those striving to make a living in my community into perspective.
It’s all of these factors that lead me to the view point I have as a small buisness owner. I created PaperTone Studio so that people coming up through the arts have a place to ask questions and learn about how they can produce art that lives on its own successfully. When you come to get a song recorded at our studio we talk about promotion and imagery in the same breath as the note choices being recorded. When your film is being mix for theatrical release, you can come sit in and collaboratively make the picture come to life!
PaperTone Studio is an Audio forward Media Production Company run by creatives, for everyone!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
You face a lot of adversity coming up as a creative but it can be extremely rewarding too. My favorite moment is when someone who doesn’t completely understand how to convey what they’re looking for sonically has that epiphany that allows them to communicate with me and puts us on the same page. Often times when looking for a sound we find ourselves using terms that don’t exist like “anxious.” Yes, anxious is a word but what is an anxious sound? We could spend all day throwing darts till we find it, but lets take a break and look for references. Outside of working on my communication breaks to gain new perspective on a project, I find that its often these simple things I find most rewarding.
