Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aaron May. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aaron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Successful individuals have to have a clear vision of what they want to achieve, this combined with a consistent work ethic tied to a plan to reach the goal. You have to show up, put in the work on a daily basis. I alway reference the great wall of china. The wall was built over the course of generations. It was built by laying bricks relentlessly every single day, year after year. You don’t have to accomplish everything in a single day, but you have to do something every single day to take a step toward where you want to go. Lay 1 brick a day and eventually you will build your castle. I am also firm believer that success is not only in the final result, but it is how you handle the journey to get there. You are successful if you love what you do, if you treat others with empathy and kindness, and you strive to put good things out into the world.
Aaron, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Aaron May, I am a Luxury Realtor with Coastal Luxury Partners in Sarasota, Florida. Before this I was the Director of Tennis at Esplanade Golf and Country Club in Lakewood Ranch. After my professional tennis career ended, I attended Florida State University studying Social Science and Psychology while also serving in the Marine Corps. I came back to Sarasota as a Head Tennis Coach at IMG Academy working with several top pros and world ranked junior players. During this time I started and sold a work out supplement company which helped launch several side efforts into helping young entrepreneurs market themselves and build their brands online. I have continued this while working at several other tennis clubs and dabbling in Sales and Construction as a Project Manager with Neal Communities, which peaked my interest in the sales side of the Real Estate business and led me to get my real estate license. I used my network to move quickly into the luxury market. As one of Florida’s best luxury realtors, I possesses extensive market knowledge, provide exceptional client service, have a strong network across the country, execute effective marketing strategies, possess excellent negotiation skills, and pride myself on unwavering integrity. I understand the luxury market, prioritize my clients’ needs, have valuable connections, utilize sophisticated marketing techniques, and negotiate favorable deals. All while maintaining the utmost professionalism.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My whole life and career as an entrepreneur has been based on pivots. I feel that willingness to pivot is what fuels a great entrepreneurial career. It is very rare that the first business venture you set out on is the one that works. You have to fail over and over and over again. Learn from each experience. These lessons learned lead to the endeavors that follow to being more fruitful. My biggest pivot in life was my latest from a tennis career that spanned 18 years of coaching and playing at the highest level to disrupting the Florida real estate market. High level athletes are used to a highly competitive arena with small margins for victory. This is why athletes make great entrepreneurs, because both fields share those attributes. I tried other fields and dabbled in many different career paths but always came back to tennis because it is what I know most about and I knew the work required to be successful, which was very rigorous and took full dedication. I was able to make a successful pivot into real estate because it feeds those same requirements of success. My dedication to always continuing to learn and going above and beyond for my clients is a reflection of what it took me to reach the highest levels of my sport.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
When I was coaching at IMG, I started a supplement company specializing in pre-workout powder. I spent 2 years building the ideal formula that gave the user all the benefits of the best pre-workout supplements on the market without the devastating crash afterward. We were able to get picked up by a chain of nutrition stores based in Texas and the we launched our product sold out in under 2 weeks across all stores. While this sounds amazing, there was a very valuable lesson learned in my second business attempt…I wasn’t prepared to succeed. We did not have the infrastructure in place to keep up with the demand, the funds to pay the fees required for insurance against potential law suits, the list goes on. What it ultimately led to was me making the decision to sell the business. I did come out with a nice profit on the sale, but it was pennies on the dollar to what the business could have been scaled to if I had properly prepared for the business not only to succeed, but to succeed quickly.
