We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aaron Cold a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aaron, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
How did you learn to do what you do?
My journey into electronic music began in the late 80s with EBM, inspired by mix tapes from Frankfurt’s “Dorian Gray” club. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, and raised in the nearby town of Ketsch, I had a strong foundation in music from my early years, taking lessons in organ and keyboard. My passion for creating music led my parents to invest in a mini recording studio setup, including a Tascam 4-track tape recorder and an Atari ST with early Cubase software.
I improvised with my equipment by experimenting with turntables and mixers, even creating slipmats from felt from a craft shop because I couldn’t find them in stores. I also made music on a Commodore Amiga 500, creatively overcoming its limitations by syncing two computers to double the tracks without MIDI.
I DJed at private parties using various sound sources, including tape decks and VHS tapes. My first professional break came in 1993 when I became a resident DJ at a small club in a nearby town, playing Happy Breakbeat and Happy Hardcore.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
Knowing what I know now, I would have focused more on music theory and sound design early on. These skills are essential for creating unique and impactful tracks. Additionally, seeking out mentors and engaging more with the DJ and producer community could have significantly sped up my learning process. Networking and learning from others are invaluable resources that I didn’t fully utilize in the beginning.
What skills do you think were most essential?
The most essential skills in my craft include a deep understanding of rhythm and timing, an ear for good music, and technical proficiency with DJ equipment and software. Creativity and the ability to read the crowd are also crucial for delivering memorable performances. Resourcefulness and adaptability have been key skills, especially when working with limited equipment and finding creative solutions to overcome obstacles.
What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
One of the main obstacles I faced was access to quality equipment and learning resources. In the beginning, DJ gear was expensive and not as accessible as it is today. Additionally, syncing two computers without MIDI and working with basic software required a lot of improvisation. Despite these challenges, I was able to develop my skills and grow as a DJ and producer through persistence and creativity.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
About Yourself and How You Got Into Your Industry
My name is Aaron Cold, and I am a DJ and producer specializing in electronic music, particularly House and Techno music. My journey into electronic music began in the late 80s when I was inspired by mix tapes from the “Dorian Gray” club in Frankfurt, Germany.
My first professional break came in 1993 when I became a resident DJ at a small club in a nearby town, playing Happy Breakbeat and Happy Hardcore. From 1993 until the early 2000s, I played in various clubs and events in Germany, gradually shifting my style from Happy Breakbeat and Jungle to House music, focusing mainly on Manchester House, Speed Garage, and 2Step.
In the early 2000s, I also started to play and produce Trance under the name “Estepan Del Sol” and had my first Trance release on Trendline Records/DMG/Sony Music.
My next Trance release was on Deep Blue Recordings/UCMG and entered the top 10 of the Swiss DJ charts (SDC), where it remained for 8 weeks, and also entered the German DJ charts, staying in the top 20 for 5 weeks. This track was supported by several famous DJs, including Paul Van Dyk.
My first House mix CD was also released in 2001 on Trendline Records/DMG/Sony Music, featuring some of my tracks.
From there, I released several songs and mix CDs, appeared on a wide range of compilation albums, and had my debut album “VX @ Sun Zero – The LordZ Of Hardstyle” in 2004 on Trendline Records/DMG/Sony Music, showcasing the emerging Hardstyle genre. In 2001, I began my first radio show called “Sounds United”, which aired every second Sunday on a local radio station. The mix show also featured guest DJs. I played on various radio stations, including the legendary “Radio Unity”, a pioneer in online streaming with video streaming capabilities. My sound evolved towards Funky, Disco, and Latin House.
In 2002 I partnered with Phil Santora to form the DJ team “The Highdelberg Co-N-Action”.
In 2006 I moved to Altea, Spain, a short boat trip from Ibiza. I played in several venues in this area called “Costa Blanca”. In 2010, I started my radio show “Sounds of Ibiza”, which has been and still is broadcast on several radio stations, including Ibiza Live Radio.
Around 2014, I focused more on Tech House and Deep Techno. You can hear that in my releases and radio sets that you can still listen to on Mixcloud (https://www.mixcloud.com/aaroncoldofficial/).
In 2019, I took a break from my music career.
In 2021, I moved to Tucson, Arizona.
Since late summer 2023, I’ve been back in the groove and full of energy.

I aim to blend influences from my early years with modern trends to create a unique sound that resonates with both longtime fans and new listeners.
When playing House music, I always add classic tracks to the mix. For the older audience, it brings back memories, while for the younger ones, it still sounds like some new track. House music can be timeless! I believe in creating only positive vibes through my sets and productions, ensuring everyone leaves with a smile and a memorable experience.
Ultimately, I want to leave a lasting impact on the electronic music scene and inspire others to pursue their creative passions.
