We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aaron C. Butler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aaron C. below.
Aaron C., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for BookButler Publishing Company really began with a simple summer project that blossomed into something much larger and more impactful than I ever anticipated. As a father, I wanted to encourage creativity in my daughters, Nalani and Leila, especially during their summer breaks. That particular summer, when they were in the 5th and 6th grades, I gave them a challenge: create something imaginative. What started as a fun, educational project turned into the foundation of our business—they decided to write a story, which later became their first published book.
At the time, my background in business development gave me the tools to figure out how to navigate the publishing world. I dove headfirst into learning the ins and outs of the publishing process to help them bring their book to life. The experience was eye-opening. I saw how much potential there was, not just in my daughters’ creativity, but in helping other aspiring authors who, like us, had a story to tell but didn’t know where to start.
It wasn’t long before we realized we were addressing a gap in the publishing world. While many people had great stories to share, they didn’t have the support they needed to navigate the complexities of publishing or the critical phase after—a phase that’s often overlooked: promotion. Without marketing, books can easily sit in storage, never reaching the audience they were meant for. As we were out promoting our book, we met countless authors who were struggling with just that—getting their books into readers’ hands.
That’s when I knew we were onto something more than just a family project. We were solving a problem that others weren’t fully addressing: not only helping people publish their books but also teaching them how to market and promote their work effectively. That’s where the excitement really came in for me—knowing that we could help turn someone’s passion project into something that reaches and resonates with people.
This led to the evolution of our business. We started mentoring aspiring authors and offering comprehensive publishing and marketing services to give their books the exposure they deserved. We also launched BBPC Events, creating spaces for authors to engage directly with their community through book talks, networking, and sales. Additionally, we developed Spotlight Sessions, which provide dynamic video features for not just authors but also artists, entrepreneurs, and other innovators to elevate their brands and connect with new audiences.
What excites me is knowing that BookButler Publishing is more than just a publishing company—it’s a platform for storytelling, connection, and growth. We’re not just helping people write books; we’re helping them share their stories with the world in a way that makes an impact.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Aaron C. Butler, a visionary entrepreneur, and the proud father of three incredibly talented children who are all vital to the success of BookButler Publishing Company (BBPC). My journey into the world of publishing wasn’t something I initially set out to do, but rather a passion that grew from a simple summer project I encouraged my daughters to take on during their school break. What started as a fun creative activity for them—a project to write their first book—quickly became the foundation of BBPC.
At that time, I used my business development background to navigate the publishing world, learning the entire process from start to finish to bring my daughters’ first book to life. That experience opened my eyes to a much larger need. I saw how many aspiring authors had stories to tell but struggled with the complexities of publishing. Even more, many of them didn’t know how to get their books into the hands of readers once published. BBPC was created to fill that gap, offering not just publishing services, but also the crucial marketing and promotion that are often overlooked.
Today, BBPC provides a comprehensive suite of services for authors. We help them through every stage of the process, from writing and editing to publishing and promotion. Our Spotlight Sessions product offers dynamic promotional video features that allow authors, artists, and entrepreneurs to share their stories and reach new audiences through engaging multimedia content. What sets BBPC apart is that we go beyond simply publishing—we mentor authors and provide them with the tools and strategies they need to build their platform and succeed long after their book is printed.
BBPC is very much a family effort. My daughter Nalani, a recent graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in media and communications, plays a pivotal role as our lead content creator. She heads Spotlight Sessions and drives our social media and marketing initiatives. My daughter Leila, currently in her fourth year at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, helps with business development, and accounting, and also contributes as a writer. My son Marco, a middle-school-aged student, brings a youthful perspective and contributes as a writer, adding a fresh voice to our team. Together, they’ve helped BBPC grow and thrive, bringing fresh ideas and innovation to the company.
Additionally, we have an incredible group that supports our events and community engagement efforts. Dr. Michial Gill is a key player who helps manage BBPC Events, where we create opportunities for local authors to connect with readers through book talks, networking, and workshops. We’re also fortunate to have Cassandra Reed Anderson, Bobby Anderson, Dr. LaKeyetta Reed, and Wilbert Moultrie as part of our dedicated events team, ensuring that every event is a success.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A pivotal moment in my career came a few years before BookButler Publishing Company (BBPC) was even an idea. At the time, I was managing a large Due Diligence firm with offices in major cities like Washington D.C., New York, and Los Angeles. My job involved frequent travel to cities like San Francisco, Houston, Miami, and Charlotte, and while it was an exciting time in my career, it left little room for flexibility. I was always on the go, and although I enjoyed the work, I found myself missing out on some of the most important moments with my daughters as they grew into their preteen years.
That’s when I knew I had to pivot. I wanted the freedom to be more present—whether it was for birthdays, family outings, or even something as simple as attending their dance recitals, gymnastics meets, or ice skating practices. So, I made the decision to shift away from the corporate grind of managing the Due Diligence firm and started my small-to-medium business consulting and professional services firm. This transition was a game-changer. It not only gave me control over my time but also allowed me to be more available for my daughters as they moved into high school. I was able to support them as they played lacrosse and cheered, and now, I’m able to be there for my son as he competes in wrestling and football. These are moments I wouldn’t trade for the world, and the pivot allowed me to be fully present for them.
What I didn’t realize at the time was just how crucial this pivot would be in shaping the next chapter of my life. It was during those summers when I had more time at home, that I encouraged my daughters’ creativity and guided them as they wrote their first book. Little did I know, that summer project would be the foundation for BBPC, a company that now supports countless authors, readers, illustrators, and content creators.
Interestingly enough, just as the consulting business began to hit its stride, I found myself at the beginning of yet another pivot with the birth of our publishing company. It’s funny how life works sometimes—you think you’ve found your path, and then another opportunity presents itself, asking you to adapt and evolve again. But I’ve learned that these moments of change often lead to the most rewarding experiences. BBPC has been that for me—a chance to merge my professional expertise with a passion for storytelling and to create something that not only fulfills me personally but also makes a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
The lesson I’ve taken from these pivots is that sometimes the freedom we seek comes from making bold decisions to step away from what’s comfortable. In doing so, we open ourselves up to possibilities we never imagined, and we create space for new opportunities to emerge—not just for ourselves, but for the people we love and the communities we serve.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that success only comes through constant hustle and never stepping back. For a long time, I believed that the only way to move forward was to push relentlessly, stay on the grind, and keep my foot on the gas. This mindset served me well when I was managing a large Due Diligence firm and overseeing multiple offices. The constant travel, client meetings, and high-pressure environment seemed to reinforce that belief—if I wasn’t going full throttle, I wasn’t doing enough.
But over time, I realized this mindset was not sustainable. The backstory here ties into a personal turning point when I started noticing how much I was missing out on with my family. My children were getting older, and I wasn’t as present for the small but meaningful moments. I wasn’t around as much to guide them through their creative pursuits or to just be there for the day-to-day. That’s when I started to unlearn the belief that hustle was the only way forward. It became clear that true success also involves balance and prioritizing what matters most.
When I transitioned out of the corporate world and started my consulting business, it was because I wanted that balance. It wasn’t about pushing harder but working smarter—being in control of my own time so I could be there for my kids when they needed me. I was able to attend my daughters’ lacrosse games and cheerleading competitions, and now, I’m in the front row for my son’s wrestling matches and football games. None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t let go of that ‘always on’ mentality.
That pivot led to the creation of BBPC, which also showed me that sometimes stepping back allows space for creativity and new opportunities to grow. If I hadn’t unlearned that lesson, I doubt we’d have a thriving publishing company today. The most valuable thing I’ve learned is that success is not just about the hustle; it’s about making space for the things and people that truly matter, and sometimes that means shifting your mindset and redefining what success looks like.
