Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aarohi Bansal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Aarohi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
It is so important to have a passion for learning and to continuously develop your skills in the creative fields. I consider it to be one of the most important aspects of my illustration practice. This passion often motivates me to try new skills or simply create the work I desire, pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I was taught that learning about your craft means understanding the rules and learning how to break them. Drawing in perspective is still a challenge for me. However, I prioritize my interpretation of forms and shapes, and how I convey them to the audience, over drawing with strict accuracy.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an illustrator and graphic designer from India. From a young age, I harbored a deep interest in art and desired to pursue a career in a related field. This led me to study communication design for my undergraduate degree in Mumbai, where I discovered my preference for communicating through illustration. However, it wasn’t until I applied for a master’s program in the United States while working as a graphic designer that I could fully dedicate myself to illustration as my primary career path. Since 2022, I have been diligently honing my illustration style and voice.
I work with digital tools like Photoshop and Procreate, as well as analog mediums such as gouache and colored pencils. Additionally, I have ventured into the realm of animation. My work primarily focuses on conveying ideas through whimsical characters and narratives, utilizing a visual language characterized by vibrant colors and patterns. My aim is to shed light on everyday situations that are often overlooked or mundane, presenting them from a fresh and humorous perspective that captivates and entertains my audience.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe that there are many misconceptions and misunderstandings regarding what it means to be an artist or a creative thinker. Speaking from my own experience, I have found that people often don’t comprehend the amount of work that goes into the creative process. Frequently, the viewer only sees the final product, which has been refined and simplified after multiple rounds of work. Valuing the craft and understanding the crafting process will promote more transparency between consumers and artists, leading to better support for the community.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am interested in combining my skills in illustration and design with my passion for books, aiming to work in the publishing and editorial industry. I am particularly drawn to storytelling and character illustration. Additionally, I am always open to exploring new opportunities where I can apply my skills effectively. My overarching goal is to create work that inspires emotional responses from my audience and fosters a shift in perspectives.
