We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aaliyah David . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aaliyah below.
Alright, Aaliyah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Earning a full time living surprisingly didn’t seem like it took too much time, however, I was working so hard, I didn’t realize how much time did go by… Once you have some goals set up for yourself and a strategy, it’s inevitable that you’ll reach them before you even know it. It definitely wasn’t like this in the beginning, but when you’re so hungry, once you start earning and putting up, you can’t stop! Being focused, committed, and consistent is what truly got me to the position I am in now to fully live off of my creative work.
Aaliyah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Aaliyah David, and I am the hairstylist behind Iamaaliyahdavid on Instagram. I have earned my master cosmetologist degree with West Georgia Technical college year of 2020 and have been laying my hands on wigs since I was 17. What really grasp my interest in wigs and weaves were videos on Youtube that I would stay up all night watching until I wanted to invest my money into some hair myself. I made my first U-part wig hand sewn, and then eventually with the same hair, I made a full wig with a lace closure attached. Afterwards, I pretty much became obsessed and did all of my friends hair and myself until I actually got the hang of it. As I got more skilled, I asked myself, “why not further educate yourself on something that could potentially provide you freedom, peace, and financial freedom?”.
Eventually I wanted to venture more into the entrepreneurial side and invest in hair and I started my hair business in 2019. My first year into my hair business, I have accumulated approximately $22,000… that’s a little over double than what my last job was paying. It wasn’t super easy and of course I jumped into it blind folded… faith is what made everything thrive.
My intentions when I work on every single head is pure and full of love! It’s my hard work and dedication literally shown in physical form as beauty and that’s what truly brings me peace and life currently. Im so proud of always believing myself and always telling myself i’m not a quitter! I never quit what I started unless it does not serve me no longer.
Overall, I would love for all my potential customers and clients to know that i’m already grateful for your interest and i’m so excited for new adventures and projects.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience strictly from being myself, and definitely trial and error! Before I started posting on my instagram, I built a portfolio of my work in my photo gallery. One of my instructors from school informed me to build your portfolio as early as you start no matter how you may think your work looks. Seeing your progress from the beginning is such a warm, humbling, experience. It’s beautiful to see where you started. Over time, practicing and mastering your work is inevitable. An audience will cling on to that, you will have people there supporting you from the beginning until you reach more and more supporters. Stay down, and stay consistent!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission is to eventually gain financial freedom from multiple sources of creative talents/gifts. I have so many hobbies that I believe I can master, spread knowledge and also find ways to support myself financially! Then spreading awareness of that to others who love creating as well, so they can also gain financial freedom from their creative abilities.
