We recently connected with A.J. Castro and have shared our conversation below.
A.J., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
To begin with, when you embark on any endeavor, it’s crucial to approach it with dedication and commitment. In the entertainment industry particularly, passion is essential because there are numerous challenges that can deter you. Think of it as the driving force behind your efforts. Without genuine enthusiasm for your craft, burnout can set in faster than you might anticipate.
Once you’ve established that passion, it’s important not to assume you know everything. Improvement is an ongoing process. Seek out classes or studios that prioritize growth and development. Look for environments that offer constructive feedback and opportunities for advancement, striking a balance between encouragement and challenge.
Early in my career, I made the mistake of believing I didn’t need formal training as an actor. Looking back, I realize the importance of investing in coaching for auditions and maintaining consistent practice through weekly classes. By neglecting these aspects, I likely missed out on valuable opportunities. It’s essential to find a equilibrium between enjoying the journey and committing to the necessary processes of skill development.
When I added script writing to my tool belt, I prioritized education by enrolling in classes and workshops. This immersive approach allowed me to delve into the intricacies of storytelling and refine my writing skills, revealing nuances I may have overlooked when focusing solely on acting.
A.J., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since stepping into the entertainment arena in 2006, my journey as an actor has been a rich tapestry of experiences and learning. I’ve honed my craft under the guidance of luminaries like Jeff Perry and the esteemed Steppenwolf Theater Company. Graduating from the iO West improv and sketch programs added another layer to my skill set, and my ongoing involvement at SKS keeps me on my toes.
I take pride in delivering performances of the highest quality while ensuring that the process remains enjoyable. Reflecting on my career, a few standout moments come to mind. One such highlight was a memorable fight scene with LL Cool J on NCIS Los Angeles. Another noteworthy occasion was gracing the live studio set of Will and Grace and working opposite Sean Hayes. I feel proud that I got to create a lasting imprint on many shows and have worked with a legends like Sean and LL Cool J.
I’ll always remember my first pilot presentation alongside comedy legend Thomas Lennon, skillfully penned by the talented Billy Finnegan. And not to forget, the adrenaline-pumping experience of doing Motion Capture for the WWE Video game, channeling the iconic moves of John Cena and The Rock, remains a cherished memory.
While these memories represent just a snapshot of my career, they stand as pillars of success, embodying the passion and dedication I bring to each role.
More recently, I’ve elevated my creative pursuits by enrolling in UCLA’s Graduate-level writing program, a transformative experience that has expanded my understanding of storytelling in the realms of TV and film. Complementing this academic venture, I’ve taken several writing workshops under the guidance of the esteemed Brent Forrester.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’ve got this burning desire to spotlight the Hispanic community, you know? I want to be that actor who smashes through the barriers and walks away with a handful of Oscars for the Hispanic community. I want future generations to look at me and think, “If A.J. Castro can make it happen, so can I.”
Representation in the film and TV world is a big deal, and I’m all in to make my contribution. I want to be a part of changing the game, making sure there’s a piece of us in every story told.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I see it as a bit of a public service, you know? As actors and entertainers, we’re like the entry for folks looking to dive into a show or movie. It’s all about letting them forget the real world, suspending disbelief, and soaking in a good story for a few hours. I get a kick out of being the one to dish out happiness, laughter, or a mystery to solve for an audience. Knowing I’m giving someone a memorable journey.
And then there’s the whole process, whether I’m in front of the camera or behind the scenes scribbling away. There’s something so damn rewarding about the journey, you know? It’s all about “finding it” and discovering something new in the process. Acting or writing, it’s like a playground where I can unleash my own take on a scene or topic. It’s a way to dig deep inside yourself and let your own light shine through the worlds on a script. Pure fun and fulfillment.
