Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to A.D. Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
A.D., appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I honestly knew when I was around 11 years old. I used to walk around the house all the time acting and singing, and imitating things I saw on TV. At first, it was to entertain my family and siblings. But once I started seeing kids my age on TV, I started feeling like there’s a possibility that I can do the same thing that they are doing, as a profession. So when other kids at school started saying they wanted to be a doctor or lawyer, I started saying “I wanna be an actor”.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got my start as a professional actor back in 2002, when I first moved to the DFW. I auditioned for a Gospel/Comedy stage play titled “Mama Nem’s House” and I got the part. Comedy was my bread and butter while in high school and college, but that stage play really humbled me and showed me all of my flaws and areas that I would need to develop in, in order to become a well-rounded actor.
After touring for about a year, I stepped away from acting to focus on music. I became an R&B recording artist and songwriter, musically known as A.D. Smoove. Although music opened the door for other opportunities, the acting itch never went away. So 11 years later, I decided to do the work it takes to truly pursue acting as a career. I trained with different acting coaches and I also started seeking out any and every opportunity to be movie sets, gaining knowledge any way that I could. I started performing professionally in various theatre and TV/film projects. In 2016, I ended up earning a Telly Award for a PSA commercial with Women in Film Dallas. In 2017, I would make my directorial debut for an indie drama series. Directing has also become a new passion of mine. I wouldn’t say it’s always been a goal, but I’ve always been a visionary.
Since then, I’ve been consistently working in front and behind the camera. And while comedy USED to be my bread and butter, drama has been somewhat of a mainstay. I’ve been blessed to reach several personal goals I’ve had for myself. I had the opportunity to lead an episode of VH1’s “My True Crime Story”. I was also able to star and co-direct my first feature film, “A True Christmas”. And by the end of 2023, I will have completed 3 more feature films with myself as the director. I still have several goals that I’ve yet to reach as an actor, and that keeps me motivated. I’m definitely an actor first and I’m always seeking that next impactful role that will challenge me as an actor, and will tell an interesting story to the audience. But all the knowledge I’ve gained while focusing behind the camera has also given me a new goal and a new focus. After having the opportunity to work closely with JF Bailey Films, Clearwater Productions, and PpSquared Productions, I’ve truly been hungry to produce my own projects. I want to collaborate with other creatives and tell unique stories that will inspire the next. And soon I will have the opportunity to do so.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is really being able to freely express yourself creatively. To be in spaces where you can just be you, fully. I’ve recently learned that your talent is not for you. It’s really for the next person to receive, whether you’re invoking some type of emotion, or inspiring other artists to do the same. So seeing people react to the very thing that comes natural, by freely expressing yourself, just gives me life to continue to keep the circle going.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The ultimate goal is really to be in a position to spend the majority of my time doing what I’m passionate about. Passionate work never feels like work, it feels like purpose. And we’re all living to thrive in our purpose in life. So I’m constantly working towards reaching that level of only doing the things I passionately want to do.
