We caught up with the brilliant and insightful 60 Kel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi 60 Kel , thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
To me every project I start & finish is a special project. I love the creation process of starting something from scratch and turning it into something that motivates, inspires & that people just genuinely enjoy. My debut studio album “Energy” is really special to me because it took years to find the right flow & style of not only my voice but also the beats . But I believe it is a perfect illustration of the “60 Kel” flow & energy (no pun intended).
60 Kel , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a Dominican/ Puerto Rican bilingual hip hop artist . I got into writing music in Puerto Rico when I was about 9 years old. At first it was just a hidden hobby , but eventually a few of my friends noticed that I was only writing in my notebook . Eventually around 14 years old before moving to Syracuse , NY a few of my friends were also into music and asked me to write them music . I never saw myself as a rapper so this was really amazing to me. As time went by I kept growing and developing my skills . I had some dope friends who really pushed me to give it a shot and to get in the studio and from the moment I did , I had some dope producers/engineers/artists that saw my potential and really pushed me to get better. Once I gained the confidence & notoriety I felt as I had to take a risk and move to LA which I had never been to & knew nobody living there. The risk turned out to be one of the if not the best things I did in my musical career . It opened up doors that just didn’t exist in Puerto Rico or East Coast.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Moving to LA for the first time and not having a clue what to expect was really shocking. Not to mention scary. You have this vision and everywhere you’ve been it’s considered a “dream” . I wasn’t sure if I would be accepted or understood as it had seemed to be a theme in my past . But when I got there I was embraced & maybe not understood but more appreciated for my uniqueness & talents.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal & mission to accomplish with my music is to make sure every person that I come across or that my music reaches understands that you only get to do this life thing once . Stand up & fight for what you love and what you believe in . Anything you do with love will turn out to be the best thing to do , always ! Don’t let other people’s limit and beliefs hold you back from reaching and working to become the person you see when you look in the mirror.
