We recently connected with 5ifth Element and have shared our conversation below.
5ifth , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I love when i get a chance to do an interview cause I hope it paints me in a better light of not being “Mean”, I’ve gotten that quiet a few times, I’m Mean, or I’m unapproachable which just isn’t true. I’m not the small talk person at all, but i really dig meaningful conversations, especially when it comes to music, equipment, Prince, etc.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started into the music world around 98 and been moving around in and out for the past 25 years sometimes as a dj for artist, dj for events, host, I’ve produced on various hip hop projects (most being chicago artist) and done some work with some world known artist as well. Bringing a sound that is authentic has always been task to projects, whether its me being on the album or just giving advice on where they should be sonically. I think i’m most proud that I’m still able to still be somewhat relevant in this fast moving industry these days, even tho I listen to a wide range of music , Hip Hop is always the home foundation. If its anything i want people to take away from me is just explore different sounds, try to merge into something that is unfamiliar, you never know, it could open you up to a world of sound that could give you a natural boost to get you to the next level.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I don’t get it, I haven’t researched it much, but i was going to buy the Alchemist x Earl Sweatshirt album NFT and it was $250 per song, as a consumer and just a collector of music, that was a turn off, first album i bought when i was 5 was Prince and the Revolution “Around the world in a day” LP, it was $6.99 and $4.99 for the 12″ single, not saying they should charge that, BUT $250 thats just dumb, but to each their own.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Well…… I think its easy, support most times doesn’t cost a thing, I mean with all the bs that people share on social media, naked pics, raunchy videos, fight videos, 2 minute comedians, and i can’t even get somebody to share a link to my project, and most of the times its people you know, LOL. The focus is broken on what should be the forefront, I try to share projects all the time, especially people i know, but the race for clicks and likes seems to be more important. But one day, people will get it, then again, maybe not, but its not as hard as it should be.
