We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful 2nd Cup Coffee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with 2nd Cup below.
Hi 2nd Cup , thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Derrin, our head barista came up with the name 2nd Cup from the simple idea that when coffee is really good, you’ll want a second cup or at least you should want a 2nd Cup! That is our hope. We want to have a place where we not only see how customers in the morning before they brave the day, but also in the evening when they are winding down, you know…with their 2nd Cup of coffee.

2nd Cup , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Derrin Lane has had a passion for coffee since being deployed overseas. From there, his love grew, and he began to take his passion more seriously by perfecting his craft and becoming knowledgeable on all things coffee. He began to share his passion via social media, i.e., 2nd Cup Coffee, where he brought us in with engaging content and education. He likes to say he has Beans and a Dream. He wanted people to try his coffee, so he searched within his circle and found that his sister, Tina Bruce (wife of brother Antonio Bruce), really loved coffee. Tina became the ultimate taste tester and gave critical feedback on what was good and what could be better. Fast forward, a fantastic opportunity presented itself in the form of the Pop Local Contest at Carriage Crossing, where there was a chance for a small business to have a space at Carriage Crossing to launch their business. Derrin asked Tina to partner with him and embark on what would now be a family business. We became 1 of 4 finalists in the food and beverage category. We got to work on marketing and perfecting our craft. Tina became an official barista, and we got to showcase our beverages and delectables. Although we did not win, it showed us that we have what it takes to make this dream a reality and that our products are good! We received so much love and such great feedback! After riding that wave, we decided to venture off to the Agricenter Farmers Market in the Big Red Barn, where we could showcase our one-of-a-kind beverages and delectables. 2nd Cup Coffee is different from your average coffee spot. 2nd Cup Coffee is so good you’ll want a second cup. We would love to mention Britany Lane, wife of Derrin Lane, who is our fantastic baker! She is truly talented, and her famous Caramel Apple Coffee Cake is one of our signature delectables at 2nd Cup Coffee.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Our most effective strategy has been just going out there! We are currently at the Agricenter Farmers Market on Saturdays and it has been a great experience! We have grown our customer base and have made some loyal 2nd Cuppers! We love connecting with people and getting to know each person that stops by! Community and connection is what we are about and that has been helping our clientele to grow!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We share our experience with the Pop Local contest a lot because that was our first time we got to showcase our products to the public. It was scary and exciting! When we lost, it did hurt. However, from that experience, we learned that we had a great product. We didn’t want to stay down, we wanted to keep the momentum going. We got up, dusted ourselves out and immediately started thinking of next steps!
