We recently connected with 2Digh4 and have shared our conversation below.
2Digh4, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
We have definitely been able to earn a full time living doing what we do, whether it be releasing new original songs into the world, performing live shows, or building a business from the ground up. Sure, there have been obstacles we have faced and sacrifices that we’ve had to make in order to pursue our full time career in music, but we like to think of it as paying our dues for something we wouldn’t want to live without instead of working for someone else who is making all the money while we grind for them. Our journey wouldn’t be what it is if we didn’t have the support from certain family members and friends, or those who have truly stepped up to support what we’re doing because they truly believe in us. Everything we have done and the goals we have accomplished came from putting in the work and building our reputation from scratch. In a world where talent unfortunately has taken a back seat to how much money you can throw at whoever promises you fame and more views on social media, we stay true to who we are and the talent we have been given. Mix that with with hard work, and you have 2Digh4. Many people are quick to dismiss the arts, and in doing so, the arts have taken an enormous hit when it comes to salary and sought after careers. However, think of where we would be as a society if music didn’t exist…is that a world we would want to live in? We can bet the majority of people wouldn’t be so thrilled with the idea of a world where music was no more. We had talent from day one, certainly, but the business side of the band and the algorithms that social media implements every day for not just musicians but also for anybody simply wanting to post a video for fun, have definitely been challenging. We just keep making the music we want to make, and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. If it is meant to be, God will make it so. Otherwise, the absolute maximum benefit we got from the whole experience is time in this world getting to do what we love most, and that is pretty cool with us.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a band called 2Digh4 based out of North Carolina. The word Digh (which is pronounced “die”) comes from the last name of brothers, Landon and Aubrey. They began the band around their high school/college days but got really serious about it after graduating from East Carolina University. The brothers started taking piano and guitar lessons at a young age, and their guitar teacher, Toni, is actually the person credited with coming up with their name.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
We truly believe that God has given gifts to everyone, and one of ours is an aptitude and ability to learn, play, and write music. To us, it is such an awesome, humbling, and beautiful privilege to be able to do what we love as a career! We get to bring the joy of music to people and connect with them on multiple levels of all kinds of emotions and experiences! It is also just as rewarding when people tell or show us that we have inspired them to chase their dreams by not giving up because of setbacks and the competitiveness of the industry.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
While we could write an extensive list for this one, we think first and foremost that people should really consider the impact that artists of all kinds make on the world, and have made on it all throughout history. As musicians, we have countless stories of being afterthoughts and being disrespected because people don’t seem to have any idea regarding what it takes to do what we do. From venue owners trying to justify paying us nothing or next to nothing, thinking they’re simply paying us to bring them more customers instead of understanding that they’re paying for our countless hours of practice and travel, the use of our equipment in their venue, the wear and tear on our instruments and voices, band members, the time spent performing in their venue, etc. – to comments made from people, such as telling us to get real jobs, that we’re lazy, that we’ll never make money, and the like, it’s really disappointing to us how little artists are respected and appreciated. The vast majority of people listen to music every single day, yet they still somehow don’t connect the dots when it comes to realizing that it’s people like us who give that gift to them. They don’t realize that most famous bands/singers were once doing the same things we were. Of course there are some who were overnight successes, but that usually is because they have a ton of money and all the right connections, or they made it onto a singing or talent show and happened to be what the judges were looking for at the time. This all applies to artists of all kinds.
