We were lucky to catch up with 2 Smooth recently and have shared our conversation below.
2 Smooth, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
When I graduated with my bachelors degree I decided to go work in the oil & gas industry. I was making very good money but my heart wasn’t In it and I hated the fact that I had to be away from my family and everything I loved doing something I didn’t enjoy. It was stable and the money allowed me to do somethings that I wanted to do but I would be miserable everytime I had to go back to work. I decided to trust God and take a chance on myself, I left in 2019 and haven’t looked back since. I believed in myself and my ability to make music. I remember saying “it’s only two ways this can turn out, it’s either going to work or it’s going to work” I never left much room to think anything other than that and by the grace of God I’m still here!
Nick , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a music artist. My primary genre is RnB and Southern Soul Blues but I’m not limited to either. I enjoy making all types of music, just whatever feels good to my spirit! I’ve been in music for as long as I can remember, it’s always been my passion! It’s the only thing in the world that I would probably do for free and still enjoy it the same. I believe what sets me apart from others in my field is the quality of music I make and my drive/work ethic. When it’s something I love I pour my whole being into it! I wake up early and I stay up late, sometimes I may even forget to eat but when I want something I do what it takes to get it. I think what I am most proud of so far in my career is accumulating over 1 million streams and seeing my latest release “Pay For It” make the ITunes & Apple Music charts, that was a major goal of mine and to see it happen really let me know that hard work pays off! I really want people to know that whenever you do business with me you are going to get my absolute best everytime, no shortcuts or half steps!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A year after I released my debut RnB album “Smooth Hotel” it was taken down off all streaming platforms with absolutely no warning or reason. I reached out to my music distributor and couldn’t get a response from anyone. I was in a uproar because this was my first album and I had put my all into it and it was doing exceptionally well. I had to think fast because I didn’t want my current fans to forget about me and I didn’t want to potentially miss out on gaining new fans by not having my music available anymore. I had to delete my entire album from my distributor and manually re upload each track one by one. The process was excruciating, I had to make content on every social media platform letting my fans know what was going on while trying tirelessly to get it uploaded back to streaming services. The process took about 3 weeks but I wasn’t going to rest until I got my album back up and running.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I was introduced to TikTok in 2021 and I wasn’t thrilled by it at all. All I seen were people scrolling for countless hours watching video after video and after months of consideration I finally gave in. I made a few funny videos in the beginning simply because I didn’t take the app serious, and that’s mainly what I saw other people doing. One day I decided to start uploading my music videos, after a few months of consistently doing this everything changed! I began to see hundreds of thousands of views and now millions! I went from posting once every few weeks to 3-4 times a week and that made all the difference. I went from 500 followers to over 55 thousand in a matter of months. The key factor in all of that was CONSISTENCY, making great content and doing it on a consistent basis. Yes it was time consuming, yes it got frustrating, yes I could’ve been doing something else with my time, but if I never put the grind in I might not have been able to reap the benefits that I am able to now. My advice is simple but effective, just be CONSISTENT!
