We were lucky to catch up with 13 Gallon recently and have shared our conversation below.
13, appreciate you joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
We are completely comfortable asking for support from friends and family. As musicians, we love sharing our craft with anyone, especially those we love. We feel it’s appropriate to ask them to show up for shows or share anything we make online. We don’t feel it’s appropriate to expect anyone to buy from us, especially at the stage we are at.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a band from northern central Indiana named 13 Gallon, with the members being Ashton Powers, Colin Hatton, and Michael Scott. We all got into the industry at around the same age as each other, in earlier high school. We provide entertainment via live/recorded music and merchandise. The problem we solve for people is boredom. What sets us apart from others is the mixes of influences, creating a bit more of a unique sound. Colin, our lead vocalist/guitarist, has influences from musicians such as “Mac Demarco” and “Alex G”. Ashton, our bassist/backup vocalist, has influences from bands like “Korn” and “Mudvayne”. Michael, our drummer, takes his influences from “Coheed and Cambria” and “Chevelle”. We are most proud of the amazing local scene we have been a part of, and been trying to help grow even further.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In a former variation of the band, we had a show at a local venue near town. The show happened to be booked during father’s day weekend. There was no one who showed up, but we still played on as if it were completely packed out. Being in the music industry, you have to be open for the possibility of shows like that, and learn to make the best of the situation.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
We scrounge up money from our day jobs to fund any expenses.
