We recently connected with 1 Ocean Lane and have shared our conversation below.
Ocean, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I’ve never thought about speeding up my process or success and anyone reading this shouldn’t either! Whether you know or not (or believe it or not), there is a thing called “Divine Timing” and it applies to everyone and everything! I believe everything happens in due time, exactly when it’s supposed to… I elevated when right when I needed to, I learned right when I needed to, and I am exactly where I need to be!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m Syrian and Cuban born and raised in Miami, FL. I also lived a handful of years in Los Angeles, Glendale & Burbank to be exact; saying LA always gets peoples attention, which I was a 5mile drive from… LA taught me a lot about many things I was uneducated about growing up in Miami. Creating “structure” was probably the biggest lesson I took from being there. Miami, being the fast-growing fast-paced city that it is, everyone is on the hustle (pun intended). Nobody was taking a step back to organize and create a sound structure in my world, just getting out and gettin’ it! The love of Miami culture taught me how to bring my art to life, but also how to be Myself, an individual, my own man. LA taught me out to capitalize on my gifts!
My title is “Life Director”, a combination of Creative Direction, Design, & Art. I’ve always worn many hats in my life, it’s what keeps my mind interested. This role is about 65% complete. I work towards it everyday so it can be the first of its kind! That’s a thing about myself that I take pride in: CREATING and staying in my own lane which is how I came up with my brand name 1 Ocean Lane; it also sounds like an address in a very nice area, thats close to the water, which represents the quality I bring to everything I do!
When I have solidified my role as a Life Director, my goals it to solely design Logos, provide creative direction and consulting services, and painting. Currently I’m working full-time designing logos, flyers, websites, and any other marketing tools for clients and brands; as well as painting when time presents itself. I have a few exciting projects in the works that once complete, I will be able to add to the Creative Direction arm of my brand.
Additionally I believe, although not proven yet, that wherever my waves are they amplify the vibrations and vibes of the area/space, due to the fact that they represent all that is! Thus leading to even better vibes, good times, and a profound attraction to all that the heart desires; which in the long term will lead to increased sales and returning business!
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
At the inception of my art career the only thing I painted were ‘my girls’, that’s what I called them; started on my iPad and evolved into spray painted canvas art. They were (are) a celebration of Women and the life-giving and carrying abilities they have. They’re a celebration of life, because without women we wouldn’t be here; as obvious as that sounds it was a calling of mine. Their abstract form allowed me to experiment with colors and gradients to project her channeled energy; oh yeah I also started to tap in to the feelings I had when I painted them and noticed that there were times I wasn’t in control of my color selection or stroke choice. All my pieces were signed on the front with my SignatureWave™ and again on the back with the year.
One day I was drawing on my iPad and instead of starting with one of my girl silhouettes I just signed my signature… I fell in love! It didn’t take long for me to adapt this SignatureWave™ pattern to more and more illustrations. My SignatureWave™ pattern is the therapy to my mind, it is the thoughts to my paper, let me explain… In landing on this switch of focus I learned more about my art and myself. What this repeating pattern of Waves represents is more than and stunning image of color and depth… This pattern was inspired by all the forms of communication that we experience on this Earth, sound waves, radio waves, visible light, and of course the waves of the Ocean; or for a more technical response: Mechanical Waves, Electromagnetic Waves, and Matter Waves.
Fast forward to today, ‘my girls’, are solely offered as digital NFTs and are now known as “Crypto Mami’s”. I feel that their message and presence are better suited for the vastness the internet is and is a constant reminder of the beauty of women, in all their forms, and the life they create. NFTs are at the guppy phase, in an ocean of opportunity. To be able to own parts of the internet opens up a world of possibilities! Right now people see NFTs as a Monkey illustration that’s hat and facial expression changes but it’s really so much more..! From an art perspective, a collector can carry their collection with them in their pocket. From a real estate perspective, an NFT can gain you ownership of a new home. From a gaming perspective you can flaunt your achievements in the real world. From a business perspective, an NFT can gain you access to hundreds of events, restaurants, secret menus, private venues, etc etc etc!!! There are hundreds, soon to be millions, of possibilities that branch off from NFTs. If I were you I would start learning.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The enlightenment of people! There is more than the eye can see and THAT is what makes all of this happen. 100% of people are in their current situation as a result of their mindset. We have the power at any given moment to manifest and change our current situation. My SignatureWave™ pattern is literally my thoughts on paper, and the more people understand this the more they will see and understand that they have the power to do what ever they want!
From a design and consulting aspect ideas run thru me daily! When I am at the forefront of a project and my design and/or ideas are used to progress a brand, business, music festival, etc. I love that! I love to see my work out in the world being applied and enjoyed by people.
