We asked some of the most talented folks in the community to talk to us about projects they’ve worked on that they still think about, projects that really meant something. Have you had such an experience? Are you looking for inspiration for your next project? Check out the stories below, they are exciting, entertaining, and most importantly – inspiring.

The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my short film, Subah (Awakening), a coming-of-age story about Jai, a gifted athlete torn between his father’s ambitions and his own dreams after the untimely death of his mother. Subah is a love letter to my family, my culture, and all the bewildering ways families show love without ever really saying it. Read more>>

There are two projects that I consider to be most meaningful to my dual careers as a film editor and musician. The first came in 2017 when I was hired as an editor on the HBO documentary “King in the Wilderness”, which chronicles the relatively seldom-discussed––and arguably most radical-–last three years of Dr. King’s life and career. This work was revelatory to me on a personal level, because it made me realize how much Dr. King’s work has been sanitized and packaged for banal education and celebration once a year on MLK Day. My most meaningful project has definitely been my first short film (Danke a short film). It underlined my transition from music into the world of film and also marked my evolution from a dop/editor to a director, where I could combine my love for music and visuals. It was such a pivotal experience for me—adapting a friend’s story into a screenplay, learning about scheduling, working with a team, and understanding how much effort goes into every single page of a script. It gave me a real sense of what’s needed to bring a vision to life. Read more>>

The most meaningful project we’ve worked on is our full length LP titled “Only A Dream”, just recently released in late November 2024. We have been a band for about 7 years putting out singles and EPs but this has been our first full length album to date. So much time, effort and passion has gone into this project. We worked with good friends to mix and master the album and create visual content for album covers, so we all hold this project very near and dear to our hearts. This is definitely the best music we have put out thus far in terms of recording quality and song quality. Read more>>

I think each project we were work on is the most meaningful until we with on the next project. What is meaningful to us shifts and transforms as we change and grow.
My most recent project (and most meaningful ☺️) included a more collaborative songwriting process than any previous album — that was special. And at the center of that process wasn’t self-expression, but connection to Spirit and Divine presence, which invited us into a more transcendent experience. At the best of times, writing is spiritual but this was more intentional. Read more>>

The most meaningful project we’ve worked on is our latest album “Between myth and madness.” We put this band together as a way for us to get some emotions out and just siphon our creative processes into something useful, and this album represents that perfectly. It took us about 5 months to produce, with multiple days in the studio at a time. The band itself is a passion project and means a lot to all of us, but this album has pushed us to a different level, as musicians and people, and we can’t wait to see where it takes us. Read more>>

I believe my most recent project; Happy Planting Day is my most meaningful to date.
My Happy Planting Day workshops highlight diverse African traditions of honoring ancestors which are at risk due to the legacy of the slave trade and colonization. We are also witnessing a profound paradigm shift due to a rapidly shrinking world due to globally accessible platforms such as AI and social media, reshaping society. As these events propel us into the future, there is a need to cultivate what is left of Indigenous traditions.. Read more>>

My most meaningful projects are the ones where I strive to show people the beauty within themselves that they didn’t otherwise see before stepping in front of my camera. I get to share my perspective of why I think they are beautiful and what I see in them on a soul level. It’s the purpose of why I create as a photographer. One such project was called The Color Pink Project, a breast cancer project I did it 2019-2020. I wanted to show women during and post surgery my perspective of scars. That scars tell a story, your story. They speak of your strength and what you’ve endured and that’s a story worth sharing, especially if you survived. Read more>>

The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is a theater production called “Hollow Cross” at Soho Repertory Theater. This production, based on Keigo Higashino’s novel of the same name, delves into profound themes of sin, punishment, and forgiveness. It was an honor to contribute to such a powerful narrative, and the experience became a defining moment in my creative journey. Read more>>

I had the chance to take part in a NYFW after-party runway hosted by House of Yes. Out of 70+ designers, I was one of the of the four to be chosen to show their work. This was a big accomplishment for me because in New York, there is a lot of young talent especially in the fashion world. This show gave me the chance to showcase my work during fashion week, to a queer audience. This is something that is extremely important to me, since I am a queer & trans designer making work primarily for the queer community. I sent five looks down the runway from a collection that I have been working on for about 3 years. Read more>>

In the mid 2000s I closed my San Francisco studio and took a big risk by moving to Los Angeles. The first few years were pretty rough. Though I was getting along fine with existing technology clients, I had hoped the move to LA would bring more interesting work. Just as I was starting to question my decision to move it happened: I got a call from Adidas. They found me through an agency I had previously worked with. The project was amazing-a national campaign for Adidas Originals. It was a highly disruptive concept that involved east coast and west coast street artists painting a pair of giant Stan Smiths. Much of my work, in general, revolves around the existential experience of being human, being queer, being neurodivergent, and being amid radical, exponential climate transformation and political unrest. The Winter 2023 Pacsun campaign would have to be the one. For almost 10 whole years, I had been praying and wishing for them to take a chance on me. From the jump, I knew I didn’t have the height for that kind of modeling, as back then that was more of a thing. The industry has been changing though, fortunately. I was always finding something to buy whenever going to ANY Pacsun store, can’t help it. Their clothing has always been so personable. Because they have many different styles, it’s like you can go in there and customize yourself. So for them to take a chance on me many years later was not only a full circle moment, but also a major dream come true. Shoutout to the team at Pacsun! Read more>>

I’ve written and perform a show called TWISTED MELODIES. It is a look at mental illness through the eyes and music of late great soul singer and musician, Donny Hathaway, and has become the most meaningful work of my life. I never considered myself a writer when I was commissioned to conceive an idea for s one-person-show back in 2006/07. Ron Himes, founding Producing, Artistic Director of The Black Rep in my hometown of St Louis, MO, called me and others to that task. I came up with a show I called PSYCHOLOGY OF A GENIUS. Read more>>

The most meaningful project in my music career so far has been my EP London Lane, which I released in July of 2024. It’s a reflection of my journey through mental health struggles, relationships, and self-love written over the span of about seven years. London Lane is actually the name of a street in my hometown and I would pass the sign every day on my way home from school. It always caught my eye, and I thought it would make a great song title. I eventually did write a song called “London Lane,” using the name as a metaphor for feeling stuck and longing to escape my depression. Naming the entire EP London Lane felt fitting because all of the songs were born from moments when I was in that place. Read more>>

I’ve had a few different artist aliases and bands that I’ve performed under. Gl1tch is the one I’ve stuck with the most out of any of them. I’ve found the most success with it and I enjoy it the most! But to be completely honest with you the most meaningful project I’ve had is one I’m still actively working on starting. It is a collective called Source Code Collective. The idea of this project is that we are a collective of artists and creatives in the Wook scene (bass music and jam bands with a pinch of house) and we are based around spiritual healing vibes. The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my most recent project. I recently finished a five month project with elders in my community in the project I created, the Senior Storytelling Project. In this project, the group of elders and I gathered from July to November to share stories, build trust, and develop film scripts. After the scripts were created from their true stories, I collaborated with a local director, Katie Avila Loughmiller to bring in 3 Spanish-speaking actors to conclude with a reading for the community. This project was inspired by my own work and collaboration with the elders in my family and wanting to build a space where older adults could share their own stories without the inclusion of reflection by other family members. Seeing that I was graduating soon, I filled my last fall semester at art school with classes where I would learn new techniques and mediums. One of these was my Digital and Analog class, a class that offered an introduction to riso printing. I became greatly interested in experimenting with the riso’s potential color blends and was intrigued with how running my traditional pieces through the machine offered a new perspective on art-making. The same piece could be granted different tones with an addition of a neon pink or a play of texture with the grain touch and screen touch options. My final assignment was a longer form zine about turning into a bird and how the need to take flight reflects our interactions with loss and goodbyes in human life. Read more>>

The most meaningful project I ever worked on was my debut feature film “The Whole Lot”. For years I had always worked on other people’s movies and learned a lot about what was important and what wasn’t. I saw both extremes: people who made their own films without ever observing a professional production, and those who tried to replicate the professional production process despite not having the funds to back it up. I therefore decided to “engineer” this film into something possible to complete because there’s nothing worse than having a good script that can’t attract the necessary financing to complete. I just published a book on Amazon, and I must say it’s the most meaningful project I’ve worked on because it’s my first published work. The book is called The Knight and The Bluebird. It’s a children’s book, but I would say it’s for all ages, including adults, since its main message is that true treasure lies in the courage to face our fears and confront the unknown. It’s a reminder that facing fear can lead to unexpected treasures, whether they are personal growth, meaningful connections, or deeper self-understanding. Read more>>

The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on in my career has been my cookbook “Mexico, Ancestral Meals.” When I first began my career in the culinary world, I was mesmerized by technique and creating meals that were creative. To be honest, I was really trying to prove to the world that my food was valuable. However, as the years have passed, priorities changed, and life lessons have been learned, my path keeps bringing me back to basics. When I began writing my cookbook, I knew that I wanted it to be an homage to Mexican food. Read more>>

Space Hug is the husband and wife entity that continues to write and produce original music. Space Hug began during Covid times, when newlyweds Erik Newman (songwriter) and Adrianne Prettyman (vocalist) began co-producing and recording their own songs in their basement studio. The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far is definitely my EP, “THE FRUIT WAS NEVER AN APPLE,” that I just released on SoundCloud on December 3rd. I wanted to write without an end-goal, but I knew that I wanted to tell a story in a way that felt unique and interesting. From there, the project started writing itself under the umbrella of moving on from heartbreak, healing, feeling lonely, and finding confidence, and I found myself having a lot of fun stepping into new personas and styles of storytelling. Everything I do creatively is an experiment to some extent. I love when people love the things I create, but I also love making stuff that brings out some form of distaste in people. Read more>>

Publishing my first children’s book, “Little Miss Jean and the Time Machine is probably the most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far. It not only started my career in writing and fulfilled a 20-year dream, but it helped heal a hole in my heart.

Two projects come to mind, both deeply meaningful and connected by a similar thread.
In 2023, I volunteered with Hawai’i Walls (The Hawai’i chapter of the Worldwide Walls mural festivals). At the time, I had just started my art business and had never painted a mural before. That year, the festival brought together local and international artists to transform the underserved town of Kalihi. The heart of the event was at Palama Settlement, a community center that serves people of all ages and backgrounds. It offers kids whose parents can’t afford childcare a safe and welcoming place to go after school, while also providing classes and opportunities for connection for elderly community members, and more. As an aspiring actor, every opportunity is meaningful to me, no matter the size of the role or the production. My acting journey has been filled with diverse and rewarding experiences, starting with stage performances such as the hit play My Husband John by McFadden & Whitehead in Philadelphia, PA; And The Beat Goes On in Atlanta, GA; The Judgement in Philadelphia, PA; FIXED in Trenton, NJ; and A Small Candlelight in Philadelphia, PA. I’ve also had the privilege of being involved in television projects, doing background work on The Resident and appearing on popular reality shows like Love & Hip Hop Atlanta (for 4 or more episodes), Married to Medicine, Married to Real Estate, Joseline’s Cabaret, and The Real Housewives of Atlanta. My most meaningful and fulfilling project in my career as a collage artist has surprisingly not been a collage that I’ve made, but rather teaching others the joys of collaging through my workshop series called “Collage with Mary”. I genuinely believe that as long as you can wield a pair of scissors, anyone can collage (and even if scissors aren’t possible, there are ways around that!). In my workshops I start by presenting some techniques that attendees can use in their pieces like layering in different ways, tearing, folding, weaving, etc. and then I provide the magazines and other ephemera for folks to use. In the past few years working as an actor, I have worked on a wide variety of different films that have been incredibly meaningful to me – complete with characters I have really resonated with, stories I’ve been really proud to tell, and lasting friendships formed on set. While all of these projects mean a great deal to me, ultimately, the project most meaningful to me is my current project – a film called “Last Summer”. “Last Summer” follows a group of six teenagers in the summer before their senior year of high school. Having grown up along the Jersey shore, I chose to center the story in the fictional beach town of Salt Harbor, New Jersey. The story that ensues is rooted in recklessness and highlights how mistakes made in youth can follow us for the rest of our lives. Read more>>

The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far is LUCE NELLA FORESTA, “Light in the Forest” (LUCE). LUCE was born from my love for storytelling and language, an interest that started long before I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker.
In undergrad at Fairfield University, one of my favorite courses was a small, intimate class where we explored fairy tales in their original languages—Italian, French, and German. The class was fascinating because it revealed how cultural nuances shaped the same stories differently. I’ve always loved reading, and I often return to books at different points in my life to see how my perspective shifts. Read more>>

One of the most meaningful things I’ve worked on was a feature film that I wrote, produced, and directed in 2019. I knew that I loved story telling early on, and as I explored this fascination it led me to directing. As a fresh-out-of-college twenty something I had zero resources and no screenplay, just a head full of ideas, a group of friends, and zealous youthful ambition. I set about doing simple google searches “how to write a screenplay?” “What software should I use?” “How to make a movie?” “How do you find actors?” The answers were all lofty, mystifying, and unclear and they all seemed to require a small fortune to execute. A stand-up comedian works solo most of the time, we are on stage alone, write alone, travel to gigs solo. With that said, I really do consider it a team sport. It isn’t just about me on stage, it is about making sure the audience has a great show.
Right now i am pursuing a goal that is pretty selfish- but it isn’t something I can do alone. In 2013, a comedian, Sammy Obeid, set a record for the most consecutive days performing stand-up. He performed for a thousand and one straight days. I am currently attempting to break that record by more than a year. I am going for 1500 days. My streak started on June 19TH, 2024 and will be going through July 28TH, 2028. I am coming up on day 200 which will be January 4TH, 2025. Read more>>

The most meaningful project I have ever worked on is a painting that is so powerful, that it can instantly anchor me into my higher self. Let me give you a bit of the backstory of how it came about. Towards the end of 2023, after a few years of being a stay-at-home mom, I was feeling like I had lost touch with my own self expression and authentic nature. I decided it was time to get back to me, and so I set an intention to get tuned into my authentic self again, and also to tap into my higher self, so I could align with that version of myself. As an artist, my most meaningful project is my ongoing sculpture series titled “Dark Matter” where the themes of mental health and climate awareness intersect.
My art practice is deeply rooted in my lifelong struggle with mental health where I use the artmaking process to navigate dark and difficult emotions. 2020 marked a new beginning. Quarantining in my apartment was like an artist residency and I made art daily to cope with the global existentialism. Some months in and I realized that my apartment had become a pigsty. There was so much stuff… maybe a result of my suburban consumer upbringing and tendency to hoard. I think some artists can relate. We cannot help but see the potential in objects and so-called trash. I finished what may be the most meaningful project of my career just last month: a feature-length documentary about autistic families.
The documentary is about my cousin, who is 26 years old and has severe autism. My cousin and I used to play together when we were young, but as we got older, our life trajectories inevitably diverged. In 2022, I was relatively free, and my aunt asked me if I was interested in the autism institution she opened, so I went to her institution and shot a documentary for two weeks. On the one hand, I didn’t have anything to do at the time, and on the other hand, I was curious about the autism community. Read more>>

Grace Yourself shares my struggle, recovery, and the coaching tools that help keep me living the life I want. Before getting sober in 2007 I thought I was a monster because I couldn’t quit alcohol for a sustainable amount of time. My most meaningful project at the moment is my indie pilot, THE LAW BROTHERS. I came to Los Angeles to make comedy TV (as so many do) and quickly landed at a high level operator in the Film & TV industry. It’s been an amazing inside track, but has revealed firsthand the scarcity of the holy “YES!” in Hollywood. Seeing these opportunities disappear has been disheartening, but galvanizing. Even if the business-heads refuse to admit it, there is still a cultural desire for TV-ready comedy, and a mountain of talented people ready to make it. Read more>>

I would say my most meaningful project is the first ever song I wrote and released. It’s called “puppeteer” and it’s streaming on all platforms. This song means a lot to me because I was in a very dark place when I wrote the lyrics. I came completely out of my comfort zone. It took me about 3 hours to write and I didn’t even have an instrumental for it. This song represents multiple things in my life at the time I felt had a hold on me and control. Such as addiction, toxic people, etc…“puppeteer” is the first song I ever shared with the world. I was extremely nervous to even record it let alone put it out there because I didn’t want anyone to judge me. The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is a 7-minute short film titled “Last Night”, for which I served as the director, writer, and editor.
The logline of the film is: “On a vacation, sensitive and vulnerable Becky tries to gain self-esteem by seducing a man who is pursuing her sister.”
This project is deeply meaningful to me for several reasons. First, the story itself is incredibly sensitive and nuanced. It portrays a fragile and real woman who attempts to prove her worth and allure through an act that is neither positive nor admirable—it’s dark, but it’s also very honest. I wanted to tell a story that captures this raw vulnerability without judgment or criticism. Read more>>

My latest double album has been the most meaningful project I’ve worked on in 2024. Meaningful in content, in life and in taking the next step in my music career.
The albums are called ‘Momento Mori’ and ‘Carpe Diem’. The first one is a play on memento mori, meaning “remember there is death”, but for me changing it to momento means remembering that there is death but only for a moment, don’t dwell on it. Growing up, I always thought it would be cool to write a book and create an intriguing story. As I matured and experienced life, I couldn’t help being interested in what made some people happy and content and others so lost, anxious, and unhappy. Last year I traveled to Cambodia with a group of local Pittsburgh missionaries who have had a presence in the nation of Cambodia for 30 years. To see with my very own eyes the fruit of 30 years of people walking and praying, people meeting local needs and those same people partnering with local pastors to see Jesus Christ be glorified in the nation of Cambodia was incredible!
