One of the most important ways to have a large impact in life is by focusing on communities that are ignored and overlooked. These communities are often the ones most in need of help, tools, and services but for a variety of reasons the largest players in most industries chose not to work on serving them. We’ve been so touched by the thousands of members of our community who are working on serving the underserved from tackling food deserts to building empowering solutions for the neurodiverse. Aaliyah in Action provides Self-Care Packages & support books to families who have experienced perinatal, neonatal or infant loss. I started this nonprofit after the stillbirth of my daughter, Aaliyah, on 12/1/20. The trauma a mother/birthing person experiences after this type of loss cannot be put into words. What does your community of supporters look like? My community of supporters doesn’t have a distinct look, within my community I am considered a mother, daughter, sister, a neighbor, teacher and friend. My current employer, To Be Like me, allows me to have a platform to share my experiences, break down stereo-types, and educate individuals who are unaware of what life is like for those with disabilities. Additionally, I am employed at Potters House Capable Minds, Hearts & Hands, a nonprofit organization that supports people with disabilities.
