One of the most important ways to have a large impact in life is by focusing on communities that are ignored and overlooked. These communities are often the ones most in need of help, tools, and services but for a variety of reasons the largest players in most industries chose not to work on serving them. We’ve been so touched by the thousands of members of our community who are working on serving the underserved from tackling food deserts to building empowering solutions for the neurodiverse. Each week, you’ll find us highlighting folks serving underserved communities.

One of the things I’m most proud of is creating our nonprofit organization in my grandfather’s name, The Jim Dunston Foundation aka JDF. Jim Dunston was a man of vision, hard-working, humble, and selfless. He loved to see others thrive through their discipline, confidence, and beyond what they thought they would be capable of. The team of Divine Rest consists of board members, volunteers and partners who all share a heart for those living in the homeless camps surrounding our city who are the underserved. They are people who are looked upon as all being alcoholics, drug addicts, and mental cases which is far from the truth once you take the time to get to know them as individuals instead of lumping them together. Something I have learned about serving the underserved is that yes you bless those people who really have needs that may be going unmet but the real blessing is what it does to your own self and soul. So many people in America battle depression and yes there are a lot of opportunities as far as medications and self help books, but one of the quickest ways to change your negative self thought patterns is to go serve others! I lost my teenaged son Grant Payton to senseless gun violence on May 29, 2018. Grant recently started his first job at Chick Fil A and three weeks later his life was taken from him. I was filled with anger, but when I saw my pain got me nowhere, I begged God to help me “turn my pain into purpose,” So I created “Grant’s World” a job resource training center to give young people a career instead of a life of crime. There’s only one mission on my mind as I grow alongside the Dani Dissolve project. I want to be able to curate a safe space for one of the most disrespected, undermined, & mistreated group in society. Black women. When I first started teaching, I had a young Autistic student as one of my first students. I had very little experience with Autism so I started doing some research in addition to getting involved with local organizations that supported those communities. It became clear that they were vastly underserved in terms of understanding and inclusion. Read more>>

I grew up in the quiet suburbs of Houston, Texas. My high school was near the Galleria area and there was a lot of economic disparity in my school. This was probably a friction point and something the teachers would lament about in various ways. We all received a free education and that seemed right. Growing up, we always gave a few dollars to the street panhandlers and donated clothes and coats to local charities. Though I never understood the source of their poverty it never dawned on me at the time to ask questions. I never knew how I could be a part of changing poverty anywhere. Read more>>
