Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Magdalena Silva. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Magdalena, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
There are many consignment businesses out there today. Being a small business I provide my clients with a personal experience they need. I can be easily reached via email or text. When dealing with priced possessions of my clients, I think it is important to always answer questions, treat everyone with respect and act professional at any time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Rochester. I worked for IBM as a System Integration Engineer for 10 years in Austin, TX. While working at IBM I always felt I was meant to do something else with a more personal meaning. Upon leaving IBM in 2013, I was looking to fall in love with my next adventure. I found just that in Fashion Reloved, a luxury fashion consignment. I was able to fulfill my passion for couture and commitment to sustainability while helping the world recycle high-end goods. I find great joy in helping clients declutter their closets because in doing so, I am able to make unique fashion pieces accessible to others while promoting eco-friendly habits. I acquire clients in Texas and around the US and I sell my consigned pieces worldwide on different selling platforms for highest visibility.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Switching careers and starting something new from scratch was not easy. I was working in a corporate world with a steady paycheck so when I switched to the fashion world it was very foreign to me at first. Everyone was so welcoming though and I think the key was not to be afraid to ask questions . I met with many women in the fashion industry at first and tried to get as much information as possible. It also helped me to build a strong network within my fashion community here. Every year I pushed forward and tried to get out of my comfort zone to try something new and challenging.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After 7 years in business I decided to sell less clothes. Since I sell online only, clothes took much more time to list for sale compared to accessories. When I was starting I felt it wasn’t the right time to be picky yet since I wanted to get as many clients and referrals as possible. Once I reached a more “comfortable” level it felt right to become more selective and now I have more time to focus on other aspects of the business.
