Today we’d like to introduce you to Yimei(emair) Zhu
Hi Yimei(Emair), it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Choosing to become an artist has been a long and evolving journey for me. There were many days when I questioned whether I should continue on this path, but I always came back to the same conclusion: Yes, I want to be an artist. I feel fortunate because, unlike many who spend their lives searching for their true calling, I have found mine, even if the process has been slow.
In some ways, my growth has been different from those with high intelligence or grand ambitions who seem to have their paths set from the beginning. I consider myself more of a slow learner, taking things one step at a time. Rather than saying I’ve become an artist, I prefer to say that I’ve found a way to live with an artist’s mindset. This approach allows me to see the world from unique perspectives and embrace the journey with patience and perseverance.
From a young age, I’ve been very sensitive to materials and loved creating handmade crafts. My true early inspiration came not from expensive art classes, but from the show “Art Attack.” I remember it always aired during dinner time in China, and I would often argue with my grandmother just to watch a bit longer. The show taught me so much about using different materials, color combinations, and hands-on skills. More importantly, it built my confidence and made me realize that art is something truly fun and engaging.
Growing up with an older sister who has cerebral palsy profoundly shaped my understanding of living with a disability. It allowed me to see the real-life challenges our family faced in society and within various systems. These experiences motivated me to create my first documentary, solidifying my focus on disability as a central theme in my work.
More over, this has clarified my goal: to explore deficiencies and imperfections from an unconventional perspective. I invite viewers to see limits not as limitations but as unique modes of experiencing the world. Through my art, I strive to challenge conventional narratives and provide new ways of understanding and interacting with the diverse experiences of others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no. On one hand, I feel incredibly fortunate. I have had supportive family members, guiding professors, friends willing to lend a hand, and institutions that support young artists. These forms of support have given me the confidence to face challenges when they arise.
On the other hand, completing any task is never easy. I must admit that my efforts often outweigh my natural talent. Additionally, since no one around me is in this field, my journey has involved a lot of trial and error. However, this process has also honed my resilience.
One of the most challenging aspects has been my personality and cultural background, which tends to be more conservative—favoring indirect expression. This was evident in my early works, where my research-based approach often resulted in visuals that didn’t immediately capture attention. It wasn’t until I came to the United States that I recognized this issue. Living and studying in a new environment helped me break away from this mindset and enhance the visual impact of my work. This shift is notably reflected in my post-2022 creations.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans across various mediums including coding, interactive installations, game design, and bio-art. My specialization lies in exploring the intersections of senses, posthumanism, and perspective transformation. What sets my work apart is my commitment to challenging conventional narratives and inviting audiences to perceive limitations as unique ways of experiencing the world.
I am most proud of my project “Low-vision,” which delves into the experiences of the low-vision community. This project not only reflects my personal journey but also represents a significant step towards greater inclusivity and awareness in the arts. It continually evolves, pushing the boundaries of what can be perceived and understood.
What truly distinguishes my work is my ability to integrate technology with artistic expression, creating immersive and interactive experiences that challenge the audience’s perceptions. My art is not just about visual aesthetics but also about fostering new ways of understanding and interacting with the world.
Through my interdisciplinary approach, I aim to create works that are both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, inviting viewers to explore and appreciate the complexities of the human experience from new and unconventional perspectives.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are several ways to work with me, collaborate, or support my artistic endeavors. I frequently interact with my audience not only through exhibitions and online platforms but also through workshops and talks. Sharing my knowledge and experiences is a vital part of my practice, and I cover topics ranging from interdisciplinary art practices to disability representation and the integration of technology in art.
I often collaborate with individuals from various fields, including volunteers, coders, theater professionals, curators, workers, doctors, and directors. Their diverse experiences and insights provide me with valuable logical and technical support, as well as new and comprehensive perspectives. I believe in the power of interdisciplinary collaborations to push the boundaries of what art can achieve.
If you have an idea or a project that aligns with my focus on senses, posthumanism, or perspective transformation, please feel free to reach out. I am always open to exploring new possibilities and working together to create something unique.
