Today we’d like to introduce you to Willeen Capehart
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Story of PHASE
Five years ago, I embarked on a journey to create PHASE, a brand deeply rooted in my lifelong passion for fashion—a passion instilled in me by my mother. Growing up, looking good was an essential part of my upbringing. However, as a female who presents with a masculine style, my personal fashion preferences were often not accepted in my household. This clash with societal and familial norms led me to create PHASE, a brand that allowed me to rebel against these constraints and find freedom in self-expression through clothing.
The name PHASE is significant as it represents the various phases of my life, each one shaping the identity of the brand. From its inception, PHASE has been a platform for challenging conventions and celebrating individuality. This journey has seen PHASE apparel embraced by NBA players, WNBA players, NFL athletes, MLS stars, and various music artists, solidifying its presence in both sports and entertainment.
PHASE’s success is a testament to the grace of God, relentless hard work, and unwavering consistency. Each garment we produce is a reflection of this dedication and the brand’s commitment to providing a space where everyone can express their unique style. As PHASE continues to grow, it remains a beacon of individuality and a symbol of the freedom to dress authentically, regardless of societal expectations.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
NOT AT ALL! This has been a true journey of perseverance.
Running a clothing brand is no easy feat, and my journey with PHASE has been marked by numerous challenges. As a black, masculine-presenting female in a male-dominated industry, I’ve had to navigate a landscape that often feels unwelcoming and biased. This has been a significant barrier, but it has also fueled my determination to carve out a space for myself and others who do not fit traditional molds.
Coming from the smallest state in the U.S., Rhode Island, has also presented its own set of obstacles. The limited access to resources, networks, and opportunities that larger fashion hubs offer has made it difficult to gain the visibility and support needed to grow PHASE. Additionally, securing capital as a black business owner has been a constant struggle. The disparities in funding for black entrepreneurs are well-documented, and this lack of financial support has often hindered my ability to scale and expand the brand.
Despite these challenges, the most significant struggle has been staying true to the vision of PHASE. In an industry driven by fast fashion trends and the pursuit of profit, it’s easy to be tempted to conform and compromise on quality and originality. However, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to producing thoughtful, high-quality designs that reflect the brand’s core values and my personal journey.
PHASE is more than just a clothing brand; it’s a statement of individuality, resilience, and authenticity. Every piece we create is a testament to overcoming adversity and staying true to our vision, despite the pressures to conform. The journey has been tough, but the support from our community and the impact we’ve made so far has been immensely rewarding. As we move forward, PHASE will continue to challenge norms, push boundaries, and inspire others to embrace their unique identities.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While PHASE is a significant part of my life, my passion for helping others extends far beyond fashion. Often joking that my job is to help people look good and feel good, I’ve been blessed to merge my love for style with my educational background in social work. Holding a master’s degree in social work and being a licensed clinical therapist and professional mental health consultant, I’ve dedicated my career to supporting individuals, particularly athletes, in understanding and managing the impact of stress on their performance.
Outside of running PHASE, I work closely with professional athletes, helping them navigate mental health challenges that affect their performance. This work is incredibly important to me, as I have faced my own mental health struggles in the past. I’ve found a deep sense of purpose in guiding others through their mental health journeys, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive both on and off the court.
Initially, it seemed improbable to merge my two passions—fashion and mental health—but I have managed to create a rewarding career path that integrates both. Through this unique blend, I’ve discovered that looking good and feeling good are intrinsically linked, and I take immense pride in helping individuals achieve a better overall quality of life.
My work allows me to impact lives from a holistic standpoint, addressing both external appearances and internal well-being. Although I am proud of the accomplishments and growth of PHASE, the most fulfilling aspect of my work is the positive influence I have on the lives of many individuals. By fostering a better understanding of mental health and promoting holistic well-being, I strive to make a lasting difference in the lives of those I work with, helping them to live happier, healthier, and more fulfilled lives.
