Today we’d like to introduce you to Trystin Kier Francis
Hi Trystin , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the world of design began in the cozy confines of my mother’s living room during the 1980s. Rather than joining other children outside, I found myself captivated by my Tonka Trucks, envisioning construction sites and rearranging furniture on a whim. My creative inclinations matured during my teenage years when I frequently redesigned our living space, prompting my mother to humorously remind herself to turn on the lights in case I had moved a piece of furniture. My childhood dreams often led me down Fifth Avenue, where I imagined one day shopping in luxury stores or residing in a glamorous high-rise apartment.
Drawing became a passion early on, and my sketches, though initially simple, conveyed intricate visions of grand houses. Guiding me through this artistic evolution was Joan Harmon, my high school art teacher who introduced me to sculpting and printmaking. Her mentorship was pivotal, leading me to secure a scholarship to the National Academy and School of Fine Arts in New York, where I trained under the esteemed Doris Staal. Doris instilled in me a profound artistic sensibility and awareness that laid the foundation for my career.
My formal education in architecture followed, complementing my artistic roots and paving the way for the establishment of my brand, House of Kier, in 2011. Since then, my career has flourished, driven by a deep-seated passion for transforming creative visions into reality and cultural story telling through product development.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path to success has been marked by significant adversity. Raised in a low-income immigrant household by my single mother, I spent my early years in public housing in the South Bronx during the tumultuous crack era. Growing up as a social butterfly in a tough environment, I faced misunderstanding from both peers and family alike.
Langston Hughes’ words, “Life for me ain’t no crystal stair,” resonated deeply with me as I navigated through ruthless bullying, pervasive insecurity, and the absence of my father. Despite these hardships, I found the strength to rise above these challenges and persevere.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Washington, D.C., renowned for its vibrant energy and deep cultural heritage, has been my home for the past two decades and the foundational hub for my business growth. Graduating from two esteemed Historically Black universities here, the University of the District of Columbia – Architecture School and the Howard University School of Business, not only enriched my academic journey but also fostered lifelong relationships that have profoundly influenced both my personal and professional development.
The city itself has played an integral role in shaping my company’s trajectory, providing a fertile ground for innovation and collaboration. Reflecting on my experiences, I have nothing but admiration for Washington, D.C., as it continues to inspire and support my endeavors without reservation.
