Today we’d like to introduce you to Tavion Dixon
Hi Tavion, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Im Tavion, also known as Supa Dupa. I’m a 25-year-old producer/DJ/artist/creative currently living in Brooklyn, New York.I’m in the pursuit of chasing my dreams and shaping my own reality. I was born in North Carolina and grew up in Greenville and Kinston, where I found my love for sounds at an early age through my family and my grandmother’s house. Music was always present in my childhood and played a big role in my family’s culture and the way how we lived. On holidays, family events, and even on regular days, there was not a time when music wasn’t playing. It was really the cherry on top for the special moments and memories of my early years and still to this day. My parents used to play RnB, Hip Hop, Funk, and Reggae throughout our first house and when I went to my grandmother’s, it would be Motown, Blues, Gospel, and Rock playing from her stereo in the living room. I vividly remember hearing Al Green, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown the most at my grandmother’s house because they were her favorite. It wouldn’t be long until I found my own love for music and decided to explore this new world of different sounds for myself. I was 5 years old and heard Pharrell’s Frontin on the radio coming home from kindergarten and realized that it was my favorite song for the first time. After that, the rest was history. I started to gravitate more to the sounds to the point where I couldn’t do anything without playing music. I would find myself discovering metal, rock, dance and house music, jazz, drum and bass, rap, and plenty more music that I didn’t know about. My family started noticing my musical interest and started helping me explore it even more. My grandmother bought my first album for my birthday when I was 7 years old and it was Kanye’s Late Registration. I would start to get even deeper into music as I wanted to make sounds of my own. I started making music on Guitar Hero on the Wii, where they had a music maker I would spend all day playing, figuring out instruments and other sounds. After seeing my dedication, I bugged my parents about being a beatmaker and they gifted me my first beat machine when I was 12 years old. I joined the band in middle school and would continue to play until graduating high school. During high school, I started to get into djing and deeper music production. After that, I would continue to build the craft and when to college for music. I graduated after 4 hard years and now I’m here in NY, continuing the journey and growth of making my own music and learning the ways of this life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During my journey of making music, it has most definitely not been a smooth road at all. Even to this day, it’s still a bumpy road I have to travel down sometimes. When I first started, I was not good at what I could do now but I still kept going because I know how much I want this, especially for doing it for my health and solely for the love of music. I’ve had multiple times where people would say that I should stop what I was doing, and turn off music because “it sucked” or wasn’t good. Honestly, they were helping me with my determination in that process because them telling me what I could not do only fueled me to get better and proved them wrong. I’ve poured my blood, sweat, and tears into this craft for most of my life and I’m not stopping. It got to a point where more and more people stopped saying hurtful things and more things like “You made this?” “this sounds good” “your gonna make big some day” or “play that track for me” or even ask where they could listen to it online. I’m studying the greats in this music and im learning from their experiences, lessons, and teaching and even today, I know I still have plenty to learn. I’ve sacrificed so much while dedicating myself to this craft and lifestyle and I would still do it all over again. Back then when I was in school and college, I would miss assignments because I was training my ear and crafts. and musicianship just to become better but I had to learn how to balance upholding my music life and the reality of how things were going in my life at that time. Even today, with moving to a new city, I’m learning how to balance everything in my life with music, money, and my relationships but I’m still grateful for every single moment because if was able to experience the good or bad, I would not be living to the fullest.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As for being a self-taught music producer, audio engineer, DJ, and vocalist, I try not to keep myself in a box as I like to experiment with sound waves, genres, textures, and colors in my own “Supa” sound. When starting to make my own music, I was inspired by the music I listened to, especially Pharrell, Kid Cudi, Missy Elliot, Prince, and Hudson Mohawke. Now I’ve finally developed my own signature sound that revolves around “genrebending” and colors. I’ve built up my catalog with various projects, beat tapes, and music you can find on my socials (@IAmSupaDupa) I’m most definitely open to working and creating something new with all types of different artists, creatives
and with anyone who needs a producer, engineer, or dj.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have plenty of people to give credit to with my musical journey. First and foremost my parents, uncles, and my grandmother for helping me develop my love of music. My cousins helped encourage me to make music but also hardened me when I was first making music. My mentors Davonya and Kimyon for believing in me and helping me connect with other people boosts my skills. My best friends Nico and Matt who also share similar creative minds, and music tastes, and also for believing in me and lifting me up when I need it the most. And lastly, my inspirations in music that help me make my own sonic world.
