Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Allen
Hi Susan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been drawn to the spiritual life. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, my Italian grandfather would tell me stories about the Saints when I was just five or six years old. These mystical stories resonated deeply with me, and I couldn’t get enough of them. By age eleven, I could easily get through a spiritual book, even though my reading comprehension for other school subjects was poor. I believe I had undiagnosed ADD, but if you handed me a spiritual book, I could probably read it twice if I really loved it.
From a young age, I also had a deep connection with animals. I felt an immense love for them and wanted to help those that couldn’t speak for themselves. This love for animals set me on my current path. Over the years, I’ve saved baby hummingbirds, young crows, and even a possum I coaxed into my gym bag about 15 years ago. I just had a conversation with him, and he jumped into my bag. He stayed with me in the car for 45 minutes on the way home, and eventually, he had a wonderful life on a farm. I’m still friends with the lady who took him in.
My journey with animals began under my maiden name, with a sweet website built by a real estate friend. A healer friend of mine said I had to charge something for my services or I would lose my ability, as it’s an energy exchange. Initially, I was probably making only $10,000 a year as an Animal Communicator, and I wasn’t charging much. Then, my French bulldog Rosey passed away, which was devastating. I felt like I lost a child, but it gave me the bravery to step into this work full-time.
There wasn’t much support initially. I remember going to see a woman for hypnosis to help with anxiety, and I started babbling about actress Florence Henderson without knowing why. As I left the session, Florence Henderson walked down the hall towards us, which validated my experiences. My husband, who was protective, didn’t want people to think I was “whack,” so he would ask me not to tell anyone that I talked to animals.
In the beginning, I wasn’t getting into this business because I thought it was a “thing.” Amazing experiences with animals just kept happening to me. It took almost 19 years after my mom’s death for me to even think about having a dog. I had cats but losing a dog after my mom died was too painful. However, in 2002, I became fascinated with French bulldogs. After two years of research, I finally got one. While in Malibu, I stumbled upon a store selling French bulldogs, took one home, and she became my whole world. She reminded me of who I really was—a person deeply connected to animals.
Eventually, dead people started coming into my readings. They communicated so gently that I felt comfortable acting as a conduit. If you’re willing to help the spirit world, they will work with you in a way that suits you. I had so many fears initially, but those fears have dissipated over time.
My journey into animal communication began somewhat randomly. Recovering from surgery, my brother suggested I take a mindless class. I found an animal communication class online, and it turned out I had a special ability. Everyone in the class started calling me for readings, and I began doing readings for free to build testimonials. This quickly grew, and my phone was constantly ringing with people wanting readings. One of my first clients, a veterinarian, is still with me today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This is a great question because it has been anything but a smooth road. While it feels smooth now, after many years of doing this professionally, the journey was filled with challenges. Meditation has been a crucial tool in managing my anxiety. I work in the light and seek the light to help me. It took a long time to realize that much of my anxiety was connected to the spirit, and it wasn’t until I started meditating and calming my mind that I could move out of the way to get messages for others.
In the beginning, I struggled to understand what was happening to me. The anxiety was so severe that I couldn’t sit still or sleep at night. I read a book called “Suddenly Psychic” that discussed kundalini awakenings, which was eye-opening for me. A healer friend handed me the book, and I realized I had been denying my abilities for so many years. When these abilities finally surfaced, it was like a volcano erupting.
As a young child, I had unusual experiences. My brother once came to get me out of my crib and found me talking and laughing with someone I called “the beautiful lady,” which terrified him. I always felt misunderstood and out of place in my family. My mother, focused on my education, constantly hired tutors for me because I couldn’t concentrate. Despite her efforts, I was far from perfect, plagued by anxiety to the point of needing therapy twice a week. I avoided medication, preferring to manage my anxiety naturally.
It wasn’t until about 18 months into a disciplined meditation practice that I began receiving clear messages about pets and their owners. Despite my lifelong attention deficit, I managed to run several businesses. I thought I’d be in the art business forever but ended up in real estate. I believe it’s common for mediums who discover their gifts later in life to have had many different careers. I often got bored after a year in any career, yet I stayed licensed as a realtor for over 25 years. Being highly sensitive, I could feel everything in a house when I walked into it.
The spirit world uses everything you’ve been through to help others. It’s like they use your life’s dictionary or encyclopedia to point out what another person needs. For the first two years as a medium, I was telling people where they were going, and they ended up moving there, earning me the nickname “the real estate medium.” This journey keeps evolving, and you never get bored because every reading is different.
I never imagined making a living from this work. I stepped into it because it felt natural and authentic to who I am. I feel blessed that people are interested in this work and that I was chosen to do it. It’s more fulfilling and genuine than any mainstream job I’ve ever had.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a deep connection to the spirit world, and while all mediums are psychic, not all psychics are mediums. My journey began as an Animal Communicator, which remains my first love. However, about 75% of my spiritual readings now focus on Personal Soul Speak. In these readings, I bring evidence from the spirit world to my clients, helping them understand their current situation and where they need to go. The spirit world often provides guidance on careers, relationships, and even the reincarnation of pets. It has been an incredible journey.
One of my favorite stories involves a woman who was an MD. She called me distressed because she had just quit her job at the hospital. During our session, I told her she was an artist, which she found hard to believe. I also communicated with her dog, assuring her that the dog would be with her for a long time until she got settled. Years later, she met her fiancé, whom I had described and even named during our session. Together, they helped her dog cross into the spirit world. She is now an artist with a graphic design company and a professional human design coach. This story always makes me smile because she initially thought my reading was absolutely mad.
My work is known for its compassion and accuracy. I am often able to provide detailed and specific information that resonates deeply with my clients. The spirit world helps me guide people to new careers, find love, and understand their life’s purpose. It’s an honor to facilitate these connections and witness the transformative impact they have on people’s lives.
I think I’m most proud that I had the courage to do this work. It requires a certain amount of vulnerability, or someone would say complete vulnerability. I’m doing my purpose. I feel like I’ve lived 22 lifetimes in this one life with so many careers. I had a tough childhood and a tough life. I never thought I would be a Psychic Medium and talk to animals. I was not even on my radar.
I think I’m so compassionate and as one of my mentees said, I am trauma aware which I didn’t even know that that was a category but I think I’m gentle and loving and compassionate. I think I like to move energy and help heal the person I think that’s just my natural ability that comes through me in a reading.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest piece of advice for finding a mentor or networking is: don’t quit your day job until you’re already making a living from your new practice. Spend time alone, meditate, journal, and work on your inner self. It’s important to move the energy within yourself to be able to help others. You don’t have to be completely healed to help others, but you do need to start exploring deeply within yourself.
I didn’t quit my real estate business to pursue animal communication; it happened gradually as my animal communication business grew busier. This work is far more rewarding than any other business I’ve been involved in. Trust the process, spend time alone, and be content with where you are, even if it’s not where you want to be yet. Time alone and in meditation is crucial, and I recommend meditating first thing in the morning.
Over time, I’ve realized that meeting spiritual people can help you reach the next level. As I’ve aged, I’ve gained wisdom and learned to trust my process more. When I started reading for animals, I journaled every session. I spent 30 minutes meditating, 30 minutes focusing on the pet’s photo, and 30 minutes journaling their messages. This practice helped me trust my process.
Eventually, my writing became so incoherent that I couldn’t understand it, and I realized it was a sign to relax and let go. I didn’t need to spend an hour and a half preparing before a call with a client. It’s all about trusting and loving yourself, being present in the here and now, whatever that looks like.
I often feel impatient with myself, especially while finishing my book. It sometimes feels like it will never be finished, and I get frustrated. But I’ve learned to be kinder to myself and accept that it will happen when the time is right. A phrase that helps me a lot is: “It’s not what you are; it is who you are.” This reminds me to focus on being authentic and true to myself.
