Today we’d like to introduce you to Sparkle Hill DeClet.
Hi Sparkle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts when I was in charm school and I learned how to be more ladylike. I was a Tom Boy growing up, so the beauty industry was far from what I had imagined would become a huge part if my future. Through the years, it definitely grew on me and I became a model.
Modeling was a great way to express myself and gain better self esteem! I even entered a beauty pageant where I was Ms. Teen Philadelphia and the following year crowned Ms. Teen Pennsylvania. Although I didn’t win either pageant, it definitely paved the way for me to dig deeper into wanting to be more involved in the beauty industry as a whole.
Modeling eventually turned into becoming a makeup artist where I learned different techniques including speed and product knowledge to begin the process of starting my very own line of cosmetics.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road is not always as smooth as some may make it seem on the surface. There were challenges with getting funds and competing with everyday life.
I am a mother and now grandmother so putting my family first was always important to me! I remember when I worked for MAC Cosmetics, during the interview process I did not have a sitter and had to take my children with me.
( I know , crazy right)
Had I not been persistent, I would not have gotten that job which truly gave me the guts to continue growing.
I’d have to say other challenges included not knowing how to create business plans , filling out grants and understanding the true meaning of accelerated programs.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have always had a love for art in it’s entirety and continue to draw or paint when I have the time.
I’ve specialized in Natural makeup artistry for 23 years. I’ve been known to keep my clients “looking like themselves” as they’d say.
Makeup can be very scary for those who aren’t used to wearing it on a regular basis. I’ve created my own way to help calm those fears and that is truly one of my best qualities and sets me apart from other artists.
During Covid, I was not able to accommodate those clients, and that’s when I created FLY Brushes.
How do you define success?
Success to me means getting paid for doing what you love. We’ve all heard people working for companies for 40 years and never getting to do what they truly loved or dreamed of when they were younger.
Being successful isn’t always financial but a piece of mind.
But doing what you love and being rich is definitely a bonus, ha ha.
