Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Rodriquez
Hi Sophia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like many I spent a lot of time working on my craft (poetry) in private. For a long time I wrote for myself but eventually I wanted to share my poetry with more than just my siblings and close friends. I started an Instagram to share my poetry and then eventually got connected to the poetry slam community in San Jose. After my first slam I felt so motivated to keep sharing and connecting with the local poetry community. Eventually I wrote my first book “Healing my Hurts” which can be found on Amazon kindle for purchase of a hard copy or digital
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge I’ve found while being a creative is not one isolated to me. As I work full time and go to school full time it is a challenge to get out into the community to share my craft. Fortunately social media has been useful in sharing my poetry and I have plans to spend more time completing and going to open mics after I am finished with school.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a poet, my recent book Healing my Hurts discusses finding identity and healing after trauma. I am so proud of this book as it has been my goal since our last interview to put out a book before I turn 25. I put out healing my hurts just a few days before my 25th birthday. I’d like to say I have a major niche that no other poet has but I actually think I am just like other poets. We’re all trying to share our identities, thoughts, feelings, and passions. I will say that I am always very moved when people share with me that they resonated with my poetry or that a poem I wrote perfectly captured what they were going through. We all are searching for words to describe those indescribable feelings, I’m proud that I can contribute to that endeavor
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
As a poet I don’t think there are many “off limit” topics about myself. However a fun fact about me is I got into archery in high school and occasionally still go out to shoot my old compound bow.
