Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherise Dsouza
Hi Sherise, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started by singing for Church as a Gospel singer. Soon, I joined professional choirs in my city and began consistently attending vocal practices and picking up various types of vocal pieces – Both Classical and Non-Classical. Later, I decided to start my own band. It was a fabulous experience as I had the experience of performing all across India, as well as Germany, France, London, and Ireland. I gained a greater understanding of the planning and execution that’s required to make a large scale performance or tour possible. It was also great to learn how to adapt to different personalities and be part of a collective sound.
It’s been more than 20 years, developing my voice. Being in singing groups and choirs taught me to listen and blend with multiple voices and personalities. I decided to also grow as a solo artist, pursue my passion, and trained with some local experts to have the vocal strength and ability to perform for long periods of time. As a solo performer with my own curated setup and bands, I have been performing for 15+ years.
My first show was at one of the best clubs in the city. It was a five-piece band show and my friends who were already doing a lot of shows very politely agreed to play with me. I was very nervous before the show, but as soon as I got on stage I transformed and felt a natural transition into that role. Also, since I had trained to be a trainer, I already possessed the skill to make an audience feel at home and happy with my presence. The show turned out to be a success and the audience enjoyed every bit of it. From then on, I started gaining more confidence and improving my stage presence and performance.
Today, I have gained many feathers to my cap including Recording Academy Voting Member as well as a Grammy-Ballotted artists for my original music and a Country Music Association (CMA) Member, International Performer of the Year (Bronze Award) at the International Singer Songwriter Awards, 2022, Best Pop Song of the Year at Clouzine International Music Awards for “Baby Girl” (2022) and “You Get Me” (2023), Third Place Winner of Radio Wigwam’s International Female Artist of the Year, 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a solo singer, I decided to do Trinity Rock and Pop (London) vocal exams and completed them with flying colors. I also had to build confidence in myself and my own image. I suffered from low self-confidence. It took a lot of courage to convince myself that I needed to speak out as I had a lot of positivity and goodness to offer. My goal was to get on stage in front of a crowd of strangers and instantly convert them into fans of my music and performance. It was a tough ask, being an independent artist. Self-Motivation and self-belief played a big role in my journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter and live performer as well as an Industry Writer. I also specialize in creating learning content as a learning and instructional designer. I am also a published author and have written a book of poetry, entitled “Directions, Dimensions, Dexterity,” which is available on Amazon and Flipkart.
My work is very creative and it varies. I have my education background in information technology, Human Resources, Instructional Design, Game Design, Training, Voice Over, Artificial Intelligence prompt engineering and many other spheres. I believe in being flexible with my skills and in continuously learning new things.
I am most proud of my original music which has won many accolades as well as my efforts to build and help other artists on their journey by featuring them and giving them a platform to shine.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
During the Covid-19 Crisis, I experienced sadness, when I lost friends to the pandemic and I also was exposed to continuous news and negativity on television channels and the internet on various sad happenings going on in the world, with war, disease, famine, joblessness of many musicians and creative people due to the worldwide lockdowns. It inspired me to write a song that would encapsulate my sense of being at that time and my focus was moving from darkness into light – which spoke about pruning parts of oneself that no longer serve to help and grow and starting afresh with new methods and a new way of living and extending help beyond oneself towards the helpless and needy and and sickness-stricken people in the world. The song is about ending selfishness and promoting selfless behavior to become a better and more love and care-filled human being.
