Today we’d like to introduce you to Savvas Christou
Hi Savvas, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in the arts through music, being a drummer and performing in various venues and festivals in Greece. That experience connected me to the world of performance and storytelling, which later expanded to film. After spending 7 years in Hollywood, I honed my skills and built relationships that have been invaluable in my filmmaking career. During this time, I developed a deep passion for dance films and directing, earning 39 awards worldwide for my work.
Eventually, I returned to Cyprus, where I founded Cult Experiences—a production company and festival that celebrates video, dance, music, and fashion films. The festival quickly gained recognition, and we’ve now established partnerships across Europe, offering a platform for local and international artists to showcase their work. Alongside this, I also launched Cult Experiences Academy, where I teach filmmaking, helping aspiring filmmakers bring their visions to life.
Today, my focus is on expanding Cult Experiences, completing my next feature film, and developing TV series, all while continuing to teach and support emerging artists. My journey has been about merging creativity with collaboration and always pushing the boundaries of storytelling through different mediums.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely been an adventurous road, with its share of challenges. When you’re working in the arts, especially in filmmaking, it’s never a straight path. One of the biggest struggles was establishing myself in Hollywood, where the competition is intense and connections are crucial. I had to work hard to break through, especially as an outsider, and gain recognition for my work in a space where many talented individuals were also trying to make their mark.
Another challenge was bringing what I learned back to Cyprus and adapting those experiences to a smaller, local industry. There were moments where resources were limited, and finding the right support for projects felt like an uphill battle. Starting Cult Experiences was a major leap, and building a festival from scratch took a lot of effort, especially in convincing partners and sponsors to see the value in promoting niche areas like dance and fashion films.
Balancing the creative side with the business aspect of running a production company and a festival has also been demanding. It’s one thing to direct films, and another to manage logistics, marketing, and fundraising. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but each obstacle helped me grow, and finding solutions pushed me to innovate and persevere.
In the end, every challenge has strengthened my work and made the successes even more rewarding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the heart of my work, I’m a filmmaker, director, and educator. My primary focus is on creating narrative-driven short films and feature films, which has always been my passion. Over the years, I’ve expanded into directing music videos, dance films, fashion films, and advertisements, with each project helping me refine my storytelling and visual style. My experience spans a variety of genres, and I’m currently in the process of developing my first TV series, which I’m incredibly excited about.
In addition to directing, I run Cult Experiences—a production company that also hosts a festival showcasing music videos, fashion films, and more. The company has grown into a platform for both established and up-and-coming filmmakers to showcase their work, with collaborations and partnerships spanning across Europe.
What I’m most proud of is the breadth of my work and the opportunities I’ve had to collaborate with so many talented people. I also love sharing my knowledge with others through Cult Experiences Academy, where I teach filmmaking and guide aspiring creators in bringing their ideas to life.
What sets me apart is my ability to work across multiple mediums—whether it’s a short film, a commercial, or a music video—and still maintain a strong narrative and visual impact. Having spent time in Hollywood, I’ve developed a global perspective that I bring to each project, allowing me to balance large-scale professionalism with a personal, creative touch. Ultimately, I’m driven by a desire to tell meaningful stories and to help others do the same.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d just like to say that storytelling in any form—whether through film, music videos, or ads—has the power to connect us, challenge us, and inspire new perspectives. No matter the medium, what’s important is the message you’re trying to convey. I encourage anyone with a passion for storytelling to push past the obstacles and trust in their vision.
Additionally, for any aspiring filmmakers out there, don’t wait for the “perfect” opportunity—just start creating. Every project, no matter how small, helps you grow and develop your voice. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and keep pushing boundaries. Lastly, I’m always open to collaboration, and through Cult Experiences, we’re constantly seeking new voices and ideas to bring to the forefront, so I’d love to hear from anyone interested in joining this creative journey.
