Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarhue Guerrero.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been anything but conventional. I studied Mechanical Engineering at the prestigious Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela, where I discovered my passion for design amidst technical studies. What started as a focus on designing mechanical components turned into a love for creativity and artistic expression.
When I came to New York, it was meant to be a brief stop before pursuing a master’s in Architecture and Design in Spain. Life, however, had other plans for me. I stayed in New York and began exploring my creative side. What started as sharing my writings on Instagram soon blossomed into a passion for illustrating my emotions. My husband gifted me an iPad Pro, and I discovered the world of digital art—a turning point that completely changed my career trajectory.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me and my journey. Moving from Venezuela to New York was a life-changing experience. As an Afro-Latina immigrant, I faced significant obstacles integrating into a new culture and market. Breaking into the creative industry in a place as competitive as New York felt like an uphill battle, especially after coming from an academic background in engineering, which is often very structured and far from the creative freedom I craved.
Financial uncertainty, self-doubt, and the ever-present pressure to “prove” myself were some of my biggest struggles. At times, I doubted whether I could make it in an industry where connections and experience seemed to be everything.
Building a presence in the creative field felt like building a home, brick by brick, without blueprints. However, these struggles also gave me resilience and helped me find my unique voice. Over time, I learned that being authentic, embracing my roots, and sharing my journey helped me stand out.
One of my proudest achievements has been creating a space for my art and message while navigating the complexities of this new life. Each obstacle has ultimately become a stepping stone toward something greater, teaching me lessons I now cherish deeply.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an illustrator, writer, and content creator whose work is deeply rooted in self-love, emotional introspection, and celebrating the beauty of everyday life. My illustrations often combine delicate, feminine aesthetics with meaningful phrases that resonate on a personal and emotional level. Through my art, I aim to inspire others to embrace their journey, find beauty in small moments, and connect with their inner child.
What sets me apart is the intentionality behind everything I create. My work isn’t just about visuals—it’s about creating a safe, comforting space for those who interact with it. Whether it’s an illustration that feels like a hug or a journal prompt that encourages self-reflection, I want my audience to feel seen, understood, and empowered.
Recently, I launched a blog on my website where I delve deeper into the themes I explore in my art—self-discovery, mindfulness, and finding magic in the ordinary. It’s a space where I can connect with my community on a more personal level and expand the conversations that inspire me.
I’m also thrilled to be in the final stages of launching my online store, a project that has been a dream come true. Everything in the shop is created by me, from handmade jewelry featuring my illustrations as charms to stickers for girls who love crafting and junk journaling, and tote bags that are both functional and artistic. It’s a space where my passion for creativity meets my desire to offer something tangible to my community.
What brings me the most pride is the trust and connection I’ve built with my audience. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with individuals, small businesses, and even larger brands, like Maybelline New York, on projects that align with my values. These experiences, along with creating my own products, have reinforced my belief in the power of art to bring people closer to themselves and each other.
Ultimately, my work is driven by a desire to celebrate the human experience, to remind people that their stories—no matter how small they may feel—are meaningful and worth celebrating.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Choosing just one childhood memory is so difficult because I have so many! But if I had to pick, it would be playing with my cousins in the little hamlet nestled in the mountains of an Andean state in my country—where my mother’s side of the family comes from. Growing up as a city girl, having the freedom that life in the countryside offered, even if just for 15 days a year, was the most exciting escape.
I remember recreating recipes using dirt and anything we could find in nature, running freely across open fields, visiting the cows, and feeding the chickens. Those moments fill me with so much joy and pride even today. Not every city girl gets to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty like that, and I treasure the connection it gave me to my roots and the simpler joys of life.
