Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Tapia
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At 16 years old, I became a mom, and though it was challenging, I was fortunate to always have a good job and enjoyed growing up alongside my daughter. When she turned 16, she began learning how to do acrylic nails, and by 18—during COVID—she had started her own business, quickly becoming financially independent. When I was 30, I met my amazing husband who changed my mind about never getting married. He has been incredibly supportive and loving through every single detail.
Like many others, the COVID pandemic took a toll on my mental health, overwhelming me with anxiety. I had to slow down and reassess my life, which led me to dive deeply into therapy. My self-esteem had always been low, and I lacked drive and confidence, but I was determined to get my mind happy again, learning to understand and manage my anxiety.
I was incredibly inspired by my daughter’s fearlessness in starting her own business and achieving such success at a young age. Her journey gave me the courage to leave my day job, which had been contributing to my anxiety at the time, and pursue my own passion—starting a home decor business.
Decorating my home has always been important to me and something I took pride in. After stressful days, I often turned to retail therapy, buying things for my home to create a happy and comforting space. I realized I wanted to create those special pieces myself.
Now, after 2.5 years of nonstop designing, creating, and testing, my home decor business is thriving. I hand-pour every single cement item we carry, from candle jars to trays and statues, and even room sprays and car scents. Each piece is crafted with pure intention, and every compliment or purchase is humbling, making me truly happy that others appreciate what I create.
Meeting and getting to know other small business owners and seeing the same passion and drive has been one of the most fulfilling parts. I’ve met some of the best people in my life, in this new little world of mine and I could not be more thankful. Ya’ll are a different breed of kind.
Recently, I returned to my day job at the mortuary to help keep up with the finances of living in the Bay Area, and have less stress about finances in general, but my business remains close to my heart and I plan to continue thriving with it, balancing both worlds as I move forward. Because you CAN do whatever you set your mind to and NOW, I can personally attest to that.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the struggles have been my confidence. Wondering if anyone will even like the items I create. My confidence does not come naturally. I am one to immediately find a reason why I’ll fail before I even tried.
